In many segments of the German society, not to mention in other, less liberal countries in the world, homophobia continues to be the order of the day. With its initiative “#Mundpropaganda – gentlemen against homophobia,” GQ sets an example for action to fight intolerance, marginalization, and discrimination against homosexuals. “Mundpropaganda” means word of mouth propaganda in German.

Thirteen heterosexual German stars have joined the initiative, putting their mouths where their money is with courageous and unique photographs of them kissing. “Mundpropaganda – gentlemen against homophobia” starts on December 12 when the January print edition of German GQ hits newsstands, and will be a cross-media effort on all the brand’s outlets. GQ will distribute the initiative’s visual meme as a sticker, calling for support for the action.

Thirteen celebrities against homophobia

GQ invitedHerbert GrönemeyerandAugust Diehl, the bandsFettes BrotandRevolverheld, actorsKostja UllmannandKen Duken, rappersMoses PelhamandThomas D, as well as Olympic beach volleyball championsJulius BrinkandJonas Reckermannto meet up in twos in photo studios in Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg, and Berlin and enjoy a kiss. The result of the sessions are six surprisingly passionate photographs. They are an emblem of solidarity, and of protest against homophobia, which is still widespread in the world, as evidenced by recent incidents in Russia, France and India

“The intolerance that still confronts homosexuals is appalling. With #Mundpropaganda, we want to send a clear message against intolerance and for a free society, as well as calling on people to share that thought,” says German GQ editor-in-chief José Redondo-Vega, “straight men kissing – that courage is totally admirable, especially for people who are in the public spotlight. The people who turned us down when we were looking for supporters for the initiative are proof that even in Germany, we still have a long way to go.”

German GQ calls for support across all its brand media

The January edition of GQ, which hits newsstands today, and is also available as ePaper, features an 8-page photo spread, as well as the campaign sticker, with which readers can demonstrate their solidarity with the initiative. In addition to the photos, a centerpiece of the initiative is a campaign video at GQ.de that uses making-of-scenes from the photo shoots and statements from the participating celebrities to bring across the core idea.
