Three young children were among seven people taken to hospital following a serious road traffic collision near Enniscorthy, Co Wexford last (Wednesday) night.

The incident took place at a notorious junction on the road between Enniscorthy and Oulart in the townsland of Kilpierce at around 6 p.m. and saw a collision between a van carrying three men and a car carrying a female and three young children.

There was a large, multi-agency emergency response with several units from the National Ambulance Service, An Garda Síochána and the Fire Service in attendance.

A source who attended the scene described it as “chaotic”, adding that the training and experience of those attending came to the fore as they assessed the situation.

Paramedics administered treatment at the roadside and the three occupants of the van were taken by ambulance to University Hospital Waterford. Meanwhile the woman and children were taken to Wexford General Hospital for further treatment.

While badly shaken by the ordeal, thankfully the injuries of those involved are understood to be “relatively minor” and all were expected to make a full recovery.

Gardaí carried out a full technical examination at the scene and have yet to determine a cause, however, weather conditions were horrendous at the time and are likely to have played some factor.
