The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins are one of the key music bands to shape and stand for the grunge sound of the nineties with their unique blend of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, heavy metal, shoegaze and electronica. The band was formed in Chicago in 1988 by frontman and guitarist Billy Corgan, guitarist James Iha, bassist D'arcy Wretzky, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. The release of their debut album 'Gish' produced by Butch Vig propelled the band to the front row of the oncoming grunge wave that would grip the world music scene in the years to come. 'Siamese Dream' was released in 1993 to great commercial success thanks to hit singles ‘Today', 'Cherub Rock', 'Disarm', and 'Rocket' as well as universal critical acclaim marking the multiplatinum album as one of the best alternative rock albums ever made. Only two years later The Smashing Pumpkins conceptual follow up album 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 while singles 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings', 'Tonight, Tonight' and '1979' earn the band their first Grammy award, two MTV Video Misic Awards and soon after an American Music Award for best alternative artist. Following turbulent years under the limelight and several band lineup changes, The Smashing Pumpkins said their goodbyes in 2000 with band members continuing to work on various side projects in the coming years. In 2005 Billy Corgan as the primary songwriter reforms The Smashing Pumpkins, followed by the release of five new studio albums, with James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin permanent return to the band in 2018. November 2022 marks the start of The Smashing Pumpkins release of the first act of their long-awaited three-part album 'Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts', with the third and final act released in May of 2023. 'Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts' is a three part studio released rock opera consisting of 33 individual songs that lean into the characters and subjects of 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' (1995) and 'Machina/The Machines of God' (2000) – an intriguing and ambitious testament to the immense creative energy and drive of a band that already has over 30 million albums sold worldwide, an undisputable artistic reputation and countless headline performances across the globe. The Smashing Pumpkins will make their debut Croatia appearance at the upcoming 16th edition of INmusic festival in June 2024.
