Torpoint is a busy town standing on the River Tamar on the point of its estuary known as the Hamoaze, famous as a ferry crossing since the 1700s, when the town was first established.
On the north of the Rame Peninsula, Torpoint offers excellent views of the Tamar River and across the water to Plymouth.
Today, Torpoint provides an ideal base for visitors wishing to explore South East Cornwall.
The town's name is belived to derive from the nearby point known formerly as Tar and Torr Point.
Dr John Langdon Down is commemorated here. He recognised Mongolism as a medical condition and 'Down's Syndrome is named after him.
Another interesting facet of Torpoint is the park known as Sparrow Park. It was so named because of the reference to its size - it is one of the smallest parks in the country.
