Tail-spot Wrasse Halichoeres melanurus occurs in the Indo-Pacific from Bali, Indonesia and Western Australia to Micronesia and Samoa, north to Japan, south to Australia in a depth range from 1-15m, max. length 12cm. The species is found mostly on shallow coral reefs and rocky shores, solitary or in small groups on sheltered reefs, feeding on small invertebrates such as polychaetes, copepods, isopods and forams. This specimen is a male: the pelvic fins reach the anus. Females have several small black spots at the dorsal fin and at the base of the caudal fin. Banda Neira Island, Indonesia, 4°31'20.5766 S 129°53'55.1317 E at 3m depth by night.
