Das Gebet. Eine Religionsgeschichtliche und Religionspsychologische Untersuchung

München: Ernst Reinhardt, 1923. 5. Auflage. Hardcover. Quarto. XIX, [1], 622, [2]pp. Original full cloth with brown-stamped lettering on front board and spine. Printer's device on spine and title-page. Fascinating work being the final edition of a classic study of the nature of prayer, based on the religio-historical method of Nathan Soderblom. In his preface to the translation, in the light of the ecumenical conferences of 1925 and 1927, Heiler wrote: `Prayer is the great bond of union of Christendom; and not only of Christendom, but of all mankind. Prayer is the most tangible proof of the fact that the whole of mankind is seeking after God; or--to put it more correctly--that it is sought by God. Mankind at prayer is a proof of the universal revelation of God. For it is precisely in prayer that we have revealed to us the essential element of all religion, which Friedrich von Hugel, as well as Nathan Soderblom, were never tired of pointing out, viz.: the "prevenience and givenness" of the grace of God. Prayer is not man's work, or discovery or achievement; but God's work in man--"for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit Himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." (Rom. 8.26). Very minor soiling on binding. Ex-library copy with library stamp on inside of front and back board. Slight age-toning along paper margin. Text in German. Binding and interior in overall very good condition. vg. Item #25942
