Location: Willingen (Upland), Waldeck-Frankenberg, Kassel District, North Hesse, Hesse, Germany
There was probably already a Germanic sacrificial site on the Hermannsberg. Later, a Gogericht was held at this spot for centuries. This was a lower jurisdiction with local self-government and until a few years ago there was even a court gavel here.
Today you can see the Hermannstein, a Whitsun fire altar, which was consecrated in 1912 as a ceremonial site of the "Association of German People's Educators" and the "Germanic-German Religious Community". Every year at Pentecost, the members of the National Education Association met here. The tombstone of the initiator, Wilhelm Schwaner, is in the immediate vicinity of the Hermannstein.
Wilhelm Schwaner was an elementary school teacher, journalist, publicist and publisher within the völkische movement and chairman of the Association of German People's Educators. He lived in nearby Rattlar (Svantehus) and had also built a publishing house there.
