Biographical/Historical Information

Under Joseph Goebbels, German arts were "brought into line" with the state. The Reich Chamber of Culture was founded on September 22, 1933. Membership in the group was required for anyone who wished to publish or exhibit their work. Writers and artists disfavored by the Nazis were persecuted-- through book burning on May 10, 1933 or the "Degenerate Art" exhibit held in March 1936 (and then extended into a traveling exhibit in the summer 1937). The Degenerate Art exhibit showcased work by (amongst others) Klee, Barlach, Marc, Beckmann, Hofer, Kokoschka, Feiniger, Nolde. Many artworks were subsequently sold abroad, Göring confiscated some of them, and the rest were burned in 1939.
