Biographical/Historical Information

There is antagonism between the revolutionary SPD (Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschland) and the more borgeois USPD (Unabhängige Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands). But the left loses its chance for leadership in the German republic after elections in 1918. After Walter Rathenau is assassinated in 1922, the two democratic socialist parties reunited in July 1922.
