  • And to wrap off Better Hearing & Speech Month we’ve got a surprise… WELCOME TO THE Therapy Redefined FAMILY Annie Barnett, MS, CF-SLP 🎉 Annie Barnett Annie graduated with her Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Murray State University this month. She completed her last externship for her Masters at Therapy Redefined with Sarah McClure as her supervisor. We loved having her so much that we invited her to stay 😁 Let’s get to know a little bit about Annie! 1. Why did you choose to become an SLP? - I have always loved to talk and be with people and becoming an SLP was the perfect way to turn my favorite things into a career! 2. What’s your favorite part of being an SLP? -My favorite part of being an SLP is that my clients always challenge me to continue to grow and learn to be the best SLP I can be!:) 3. What’s your favorite activity/game to do in speech? -I love doing a fun craft because there is always a way to target language or speech throughout the activity and the kiddos get to be creative and take it home when they’re finished!

  • Each May, Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM) provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of ASHA members in providing life-altering treatment! Todays SLP we are celebrating for her service is Miss Makela! 🎉 Let’s get to know her a bit more…! Why did you chose to become an SLP? - In high school, I was given the chance to shadow an SLP my senior year. It was the best experience and I loved how much fun therapy was for kids! I’ve always felt passionate about working with children with all needs, inclusion and advocating for everyone’s right to communicate! What’s your favorite part of being an SLP? - My favorite part of being an SLP is building a relationship with the kids! I love being able to be creative and finding new ways to make speech therapy fun and engaging. What’s your favorite activity/game to do in speech? - My favorite game and activity is to simply just play! Therapy is very play based and based around what is going to motivate the child the most. I love being able to go from crafts, games, racing cars, puzzles, and play kitchen all within a matter of 45 minutes. I enjoy the challenge of fitting their goals into what is most motivating for them and getting to make therapy something they look forward to each week!

  • As we celebrate Better Hearing and Speech month, we want to highlight all of our fabulous SLPs! Today’s SLP we are thankful for: Miss Erin 💕 Erin Bailey, MS, CCC-SLP Erin Bailey, M.S. CCC-SLP Assistant Clinic Manager Why did you chose to become an SLP? - I had an inkling that this could be a career path when I was sitting on the OTHER side of the table. I went to speech therapy in elementary school for a couple years for articulation (my twin sister did too for fluency). I remember the SLP always making therapy fun so I looked forward to coming - even though trying to produce the sounds could be frustrating! In highschool I babysat for families that had children with special needs and learned more about inclusion, education, advocacy in the community settings. What’s your favorite part of being an SLP? - My favorite part of being an SLP is building a relationship with the child and their families! Speech is so much more than a 45/60 minute session within the clinic. Speech and language opportunities continue to happen outside of the clinic as well so educating + modeling different ideas to carryover in the home setting make a world of difference in progress. That way, I don’t just see progress in the clinic, but the parent sees the progress in the home & community setting as well! The new found confidence the child has and seeing the parent build confidence in their skills too are my favorite parts 🙂 What’s your favorite activity/game to do in speech? - My favorite game and activity is whatever the child is interested in at that time 😂 My therapy is very play based and one of the most important skills of an SLP is the ability to ADAPT. We preach flexible thinking to our kids - well now we have to practice what we preach. Haha. For example, I may have a plan A game/activity in mind, but if the child is more motivated by another activity that day, why not do that? I think of the child’s goals and ask myself how can I tailor the activity to best address each goal.
