Sharing this thought-provoking article from NJBIZ on the recent bankruptcy filing of AeroFarms, and its potential impact on the future of vertical farming.
In the face of challenges, it's crucial to recognize the extraordinary potential that lies within the food innovation sector. This article highlights the need for innovative thinking and adaptability to drive the future of sustainable agriculture.
🏢 The Rutgers Food Innovation Center is at the forefront of transforming the way we grow, process, and distribute food. As we witness the challenges faced by traditional farming methods, it becomes increasingly clear that innovation is the key to sustainably feeding our growing global population.
🌾 Vertical farming, like AeroFarms, has demonstrated tremendous potential in providing fresh, locally grown produce while minimizing land use, water consumption, and environmental impact. Despite the current challenges faced by AeroFarms, their journey has paved the way for further exploration and advancement in this field. We look forward to working with them.

Great article covering some of the major #agtech challenges and issues with vertical farming from Michael Grunwald. The point about this being farming (assisted by technology) and not technology cannot be stressed enough. The amount of value lost in the last couple of years is unfortunate, as there are established, profitable, and successful #controlledenvironmentagriculture business models that have been in play for many years. There are billion dollar companies driving growth with #greenhouse growing. Keep the focus on the plants and deploy capital where there is proven success while continuing to drive technology to improve operations and improve sustainability.
I forgot to post my latest Canary Media Inc. essay about the vertical farming bust. It's actually about the intractable problems of horizontal farming that fancy lettuce skyscrapers are never going to solve. It's also about how even though vertical farms use lots of awesome technology, they're still farms, not technology. We tend to get dazzled by the tech side of food-tech and ag-tech startups, but they still operate in the physical food and ag world.

Is vertical farming actually WORTH it? - with In-Kitchen Vertical Farming Pioneer of VaVersa, Olivier Francescangeli 👉 https://lnkd.in/dW9_hq6j
Technology is supposed to improve our lives.
However, when it comes to food, people become much more cautious about technology.
Food and technology have been perceived as a dangerous combination because they disturb the natural attributes that food should have.
Nevertheless, history has shown us that new technologies, when used correctly, can have a pivotal impact on our society.
And when it comes to future technologies, vertical farming could be such a case.
In this podcast episode, we talk with Olivier Francescangeli, the founder of VaVersa, a venture that aims to provide chefs with their own small vertical gardens to grow fresh fruits and vegetables.
He joins us to share his perspectives on the conflicts that arise between technology and tradition.
In this conversation, you will gain insight into:
How vertical farming can improve the supply chain.
How to make a social impact through technology.
Some misconceptions about vertical farming.
But Olivier will also reveal the other sides of vertical farming:
How vertical farming technologies impact food systems.
The trade-offs necessary for the implementation of vertical farming.
The reasons why vertical farming companies are struggling to succeed.
Tune into this fascinating conversation where we will discuss the bright and dark sides of vertical farming with the sole aim of answering one question:
Is vertical farming actually worth it?
P.S: If you want to support VaVersa and their work, right now they are crowdfunding! Support those that try to make a better world! Check it out in here: https://lnkd.in/ephdfZ3f
