On the 19th May 2023 and the 26th of May 2023, I and other members of the NYSC Legal Aid CDS in Bayelsa State spoke to a cross section of students of the Agudama Girls Secondary School and the Saint Judes Girls Secondary School Amarata respectively on how the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) (VAPP) Law of Bayelsa State Affects Students in Bayelsa State. One social ill which the VAPP Law seeks to cure is the denial of inheritance rights to persons on the basis of gender or circumstances of birth. I however observed that most students still believe and even appeared to have "made peace" with the customary laws which deny females the right of inheritance. It was my singular honour to bring to the notice of these students that extant and superior laws have been able to create a system of equal treatment for both genders and they should not see themselves as being in a disadvantaged position for being females. It is, in my opinion, never too early to dismantle the wrong notions which have found their way into the hearts and minds of these students. I thank the school management for their cooperation. #sdgs #humanrights #genderequality #childrights #nysc #legalaid #law #gender #students
