German offshore wind auction leads to 12.6 bn EUR fee to build and operate 7 GW power plants. With bp and TotalEnergies as winning companies it is the first time companies have to pay for offshore rights in Germany. Although the action revenues will be transferred back to energy consumers, this will push LCOE upwards.

🌬️ The WindForce conference, a key event in Germany's offshore wind industry, is just around the corner - and Norway is the partner country! Industry experts will gather from 12-14 June in Bremerhaven to discuss advancements in floating foundations and foster cross-industry collaboration. Norway was chosen because it is an energy exporter and is far along in developing and producing floating foundations for floating offshore wind farms. "The Windforce will focus on cross-industry cooperation in Germany with Norway as an industrial partner," managing director Heike Winkler tells ERNEUERBARE ENERGIEN. German renewable producers are going to pay the state for generating electricity!!! This might have gone unnoticed, but the latest round of off-shore wind tenders in Germany received multiple 0c/kWh bids and the German regulator now, for the very first time, start a dynamic offer process (dynamisches Gebotsverfahren). This basically means that bidder now start bidding, how much they are willing to pay in order to receive the rights to build the offshore wind farms. Bids start at 30.000€/MW. Bidders do of course still receive free grid connections to their offshore windfarms and the right to build the farms in the limited available space off the German coast. Still, it's another tipping point of showing how competitiveness of renewables is changing. They are not receiving money to generate electricity, they are paying for the right to generate electricity. 90% of the money generated from these auctions will be used to lower grid fees in Germany, and 5% for marine conservation and ecological fishing each. https://lnkd.in/eZEMcQsK

EU electricity grid operators: 400 billion euros for connecting offshore wind farms 24 Januar 2024 The first European offshore grid development plan was published on Tuesday (January 23). One thing became clear: there is a huge need for investment to connect offshore wind farms to end consumers. The European Commission has set the ambitious target of building at least 60 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 300 gigawatts by 2050 as part of its 2020 plan for offshore renewables. These targets are exceeded in the first-ever Offshore Grid Development Plan published today (January 23) by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E). According to national data compiled by ENTSO-E, EU countries have up to 354 gigawatts (GW) of renewable offshore installations planned by 2050. If Norway and the United Kingdom are added, this figure rises to 496 gigawatts. However, connecting these offshore wind farms to end consumers will not be cheap, the association warns. ENTSO-E estimates "that offshore transmission facilities will require a total investment of up to 400 billion euros." The infrastructure required to connect these facilities "could cover up to 54,000 kilometers in European waters, which is almost 1.5 times the length of the equator." EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson welcomed ENTSO-E's offshore grid development plan. It "reflects the direction set by the EU" and makes the existing European offshore energy plans "even more ambitious thanks to the contribution of the EU Member States." However, the association of European grid operators admits that the construction of these facilities will be challenging. "Bringing the energy onshore is only half the battle, it also needs to be brought to the people who will consume it," said Damian Cortinas, Chairman of the ENTSO-E Board. Germany 🇩🇪 took another big step to #NetZero this week: our auction to build 7 Gigawatts of offshore windparks attracted 4 zero-bids, meaning that 4 developers committed to build to 7GW for zero subsidies. This shows the economic viability of large-scale wind projects. Considering that 1GW supplies renewable electricity to around 1 million households & triggers €2-3 billion of renewable investments, 7GW is quite a lot! German government yesterday made a clear statement in their agreement on an improved hydrogen-strategy: For ensuring a reliable climate-neutral electricity supply, H2-ready gas power plants are considered an important hydrogen customer segment. The same for hydrogen in H2-ready CHP supporting heat pumps in reliable heat supply. On EU-level, regretfully there is still the wishful thinking predominant that flexible generation, needed in addition to wind, PV and batteries for a stable climate-neutral electricity system, will be provided by miracles instead of hydrogen and other renewable gases used in H2-ready power plants. Time to follow the German approach to reality!
