Fall leaf clean up time is here and snow shoveling season is right around the corner! Here are a few tips to reduce injury risk during yard work and snow shoveling. 1.Have a plan- instead of going out to work for hours on end plan shorter bouts of work with scheduled breaks. This not only will be better for your body but you might also find you are more productive. 2.Lighter loads- packing those leaf bags or barrels as full as possible then trying to carry them across your yard is a recipe for disaster. Same goes for loading the snow shovel up as much as possible. You are better off making more trips with lighter loads. 3. Ask for help- if you can get some help with the work, do it. Whether it’s kids, grandkids or neighbors, a little help goes a long way. We see patients in the clinic every year, around this time who overdo it with yard work or snow shoveling. Follow the tips above to help reduce the risk of injury with these activities. Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day and find ways to relax and unwind in a comfortable, cool setting. Remember, your body needs a break from the heat! Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay properly hydrated. Dehydration can sneak up on you, so make it a habit to carry a water bottle and sip regularly. Infused water, electrolyte drinks, and fresh fruits are great ways to replenish essential fluids, and electrolytes lost through sweating. Stay informed: Stay updated with weather forecasts and heat advisories in your area. Be aware of the signs of heat-related illnesses, such as dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and muscle cramps. If you or someone around you experiences these symptoms, seek shade, drink water, and contact medical professionals if needed. It's getting hot in here! 🥵 As Tallahassee continues to suffer consistently high temperatures, it's important to protect yourself against heat-related illnesses. In the current environment, it doesn't take much to suffer from heat exhaustion or heat stroke. How are you staying cool this summer? Dr. Del Carter spoke with WCTV about the importance of paying close attention to your body in these conditions. He advises the best defense against heat-related illness is to stay hydrated! 💧 Fuel your body with water and electrolytes. If you're engaging in outdoor physical activity, try to do it in the morning or evenings - not during mid-day peak temperatures. Wear light clothing, seek shade when possible and take breaks often. Since we already lose a lot of fluid through our sweat, be especially careful if you are on certain medications, like diuretics, that cause you to lose even more fluid.
