Next will be effectuation week with the #effectuation conference kicking off Sunday night in Gdansk, and Saras Sarasvathy holding the Schumpeter lecture in the EU Commission's SME Assembly on Monday night... not on effectuation, but surely with a lot of pointers and connectors to effectuation. I am very much looking forward to both!

In just a few days I will have the honor of addressing two groups that I deeply honor and respect - my fellow entrepreneurship scholars at Effectuation 2023 in Gdansk, and entrepreneurs, scholars and policy makers at the EU SME Assembly in Bilbao where I will present the annual Schumpeter Lecture.

Last night I listened to the Schumpeter Lecture delivered by Professor Sarasvathy on her ground-breaking work defining “effectual entrepreneurship” as part of the #SMEassembly2023. It was a truly mind-opening lecture; here are my takeaways:
-Academic research has neglected entrepreneurship for too long, ascribing loose concepts such as judgment and spirit to entrepreneurship.
-Wheras through her research based on “expert entrepreneurs”, she was able to map entrepreneurship across different combinations of prediction and control over the uncertain future, with four different possibilities of attitudes. The one that combines low prediction and high control, which she calls effectual entrepreneurship, is the most used by expert entrepreneurs, and is characterized by principles that allow one to use what one can control without needing to predict the future and harnass what one has in partnership with others to shape the future.
-Learning to think along these lines and “navigate” the two-by-two framework would allow not only entrepreneurs to launch more successful ventures but also anyone to determine ways of getting to outcomes they want in an efficient and impactful way. She therefore advocates not only reforming the teaching of entrepreneurship but also teaching the general population these skills (much like we do for science) so we have a more vibrant ecosystem of investors, partners and partners risk-takers.
I’ll be reading up on this research with interest and recommend it to anyone interested in #entrepreneurship, #literacy and #innovation.
Thank you, professor Saras Sarasvathy and the organizers.
