Photo of the Week: Man, by Amanda Parer

Driving down Woodward through Detroit’s Cultural Center, you couldn’t miss the large glowing white inflatible in front of Detroit Public Library’s main branch.

Part of DElectricity, Detroit’s outdoor visual light and art festival held this weekend, the white sculpture of a contemplative man was almost as tall as the library building itself.

The cool temperatures and clear night made for a fantastic night for festival attendees to walk through the Cultural Center, enjoying the light shows and sculptures in front of the museums, libraries, and other buildings.

Australian artist Amanda Parer created Man, which was inspired by the Auguste Rodin’s famous The Thinker sculpture across Woodward in front of the Detroit Institute of Arts.

From the DElectricity website, Parer describes the sculpture as

What Man is really contemplating is what went wrong. This work is my response to living in a society that is simply overdoing everything. We in the 21st century find ourselves overwhelmed and constantly grappling with how we can begin to ameliorate the problems of the world that we have created.
