A date on P J Proby's 20-night farewell tour has been cancelled by a local council after the 80-year-old popstar's sick brags about underage girls .

Rotherham Council has binned 80-year-old Proby's May 17 performance at the Civic Theatre after a disturbing interview in which the singer documented his lust for 12-year-old children.

Polly Hamilton, the council's assistant director for Culture, Media and Sport, told Mirror Online: "I can confirm, given the serious nature of recent press articles, the council has decided to cancel the PJ Proby show.

"Our Box Office will be in touch with customers in the coming days to offer refunds."

Pressure is now building on other venues to scrap their plans to host his May and June tour dates in the wake of the Hold Me singer's disgusting comments.

Proby, born James Marcus Smith, bragged about his three young brides and claimed he didn't want another relationship "because it's against the law".

"The last lady in my life was Elizabeth Conway in 1997. She was 13 when I met her," he said.

"I won't marry a girl I can't raise from the age of 12, 13 or 14. I like that they're young and fresh-looking and don't come with baggage – nobody's messed with their heart and broken it."

Proby added: "They're still in school so I can have a hand in their education and make sure their grades are all right, make sure the way they think about religion is all right, and what is and isn't proper."

The American-born singer, who was brought to the UK in 1963 to be part of Brian Epstein's UK special Around The Beatles, was close friends with shamed publicist and sexual predator Max Clifford, who was jailed in 2014 for a string of sexual offences against girls and young women and died behind bars.

Proby also considered the late paedophile Jimmy Savile among his inner circle.

But he claimed the former DJ is undeserving of condemnation.

"That's a side of Jimmy Savile I never saw. I went up to his place in Leeds a lot," he said.

"Max was an old friend. He once tried to get [my last girlfriend] to tell him she was underage. What he was trying to get me on, they did him for. I'd no idea he was into young girls."

Of his own sexual preference for children, Proby attempted to explain it away by saying: "I was raised in Texas and usually girls did marry by 12."

But, he admitted, he hasn't been able to try online dating because "an agency would get in trouble if they looked for a girl of the kind I'm looking for, they'd go to prison".

Proby's farewell tour kicks off on May 3 at the Forum Theatre in Billingham, and takes in venues in Chesterfield, Lowestoft, Clackton On Sea and Hunstanton, before heading to Whitley Bay, Morecambe, New Brighton, Hastings, Horsham, Stafford, Peterborough, Dunstable and Ilkley.

It's due to finish with dates in Dudley, Crewe and Solihull before a final performance at the Lyric Theatre in Carmarthen.
