The Lincolnshire Wolds – an AONB since ’73!

During 2023, the Lincolnshire Wolds is celebrating its 50^th anniversary as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and it’s an ideal opportunity to celebrate all that has been achieved in working to protect and enhance the Lincolnshire Wolds, its habitats and physical features, its heritage, culture, communities and management.

In recognition of this landmark jubilee, the Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service, the Lincolnshire Chalk Streams Project and the AONB Farming in Protected Landscapes network have worked with partners to coordinate a series of events to showcase, promote and engage with people who live, work and visit the Lincolnshire Wolds. From walks and talks to practical tasks, we hope there is something for everyone, to acknowledge, celebrate and enjoy the AONB – a one-off special newsletter is available, with the programme of events running from April through to December – in fact 50 events for 50 years!

And now, we have passed the halfway stage of our ‘50 for 50’ events! So far, we have engaged with over 2,200 people at shows, events, talks and walks; working with partners such as local farmers, businesses, communities & specialists, we’ve showcased all the hard work to a wider audience – and there’s still time to take part and learn more about the special features that make the Lincolnshire Wolds AONB such a unique protected landscape. The care of the AONB has been entrusted to the local authorities, organisations, community groups and those who live and work in the area. Much of the Wolds is in private ownership, with few publicly owned and managed sites. Partners, communities and individual landowners, particularly farmers and land managers, have a crucial role to play in continuing to safeguard this unique landscape.

We invite you to join in with our events and welcome any donations to the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA), the chosen charity of the Lincolnshire Wolds Joint Advisory Committee for this programme. Whether you live, work or visit the Lincolnshire Wolds, we hope you never need this service, but rest assured the LNAA will be by your side, bringing the equivalent of a Hospital Emergency Department to the side of the patient when you need them the most.

About the Lincolnshire Wolds

• The Lincolnshire Wolds was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) on 17^th April 1973. It is one of 46 nationally protected AONBs in the UK that is represented by, and working with, the wider National Association for AONBs.

• It is protected under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949, and strengthened under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CRoW) Act.

• The Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service is hosted by Lincolnshire County Council, with additional funding from Defra, East Lindsey District Council, West Lindsey District Council and North East Lincolnshire Council.

• The Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service works in partnership with residents, farmers, landowners, businesses and visitors to the Wolds to protect and enhance the landscape, encourage community interest and involvement, raise awareness and promote sustainable development and appropriate enjoyment.
