University High pitcher Eric Brunst threw a five-hit shutout to lead the Trojans past Irvine, 1-0, last week in a Pacific Coast League game at University.

Brunst struck out 12 for the Trojans in the April 2 game.

Neil Boudreau was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple for University. He scored the winning run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Will Faure.

Irvine (0-5) also had a strong pitching performance as Greg McKinney pitched six innings, allowing just six hits.

“Both pitchers threw a great game,” said Uni coach Chris Conlin. “Eric Brunst tied a school record with 12 strikeouts in a seven-inning game. It was Eric’s first win of the season. He kept us in the game.

“That is the kind of effort that we will need if we are going to compete for a playoff spot.”

Irvine coach Ryan Brucker was impressed with Brunst’s performance too.

“Tip your cap to him,” Brucker said. “And Greg McKinney pitched a great game. Brunst was just commanding the strike zone … He went out and he wasn’t going to lose that game.”
