The Rauhnacht loosely translates to Rough Nights, however in english it's usually called the Magical nights or 12 days around the turn of the year. This is the time of silence, looking inward, looking back on the old year and looking ahead to the following year. Especially in the rough nights fumigating the home, spaces and oneself is a common custom to protect, and remove negativity.
