Colts quarterback Andrew Luck retires from the NFL

If you believe in such a thing as a Deflategate curse then this news is for you — and even if you don’t it is significant: the Indianapolis Colts, who started the ball-inflation affair which resulted in the New England Patriots losing two draft picks and quarterback Tom Brady to a four-game suspension, just saw their starting quarterback retire at the age of 29. That’s right, Andrew Luck has decided to call it a career after just seven seasons in the league.

Luck originally joined the Colts in 2012, when the team selected him with the first overall pick in the draft. The Stanford product was the most intriguing prospect to come out in years, and widely considered to be a viable replacement for future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. As we now know, however, he was never able to truly fill Manning’s spot — with injuries plaguing him throughout his professional career.

With the four-time Pro Bowler now retired, a former member of the Patriots will take over as Indianapolis’ starting quarterback: Jacoby Brissett, who was drafted in the third round of the 2016 draft by the Patriots but was later traded to the AFC South team, will be the Colts’ quarterback moving forward. Luck, meanwhile, is gone — ending his career with an 0-6 career record against the Patriots.
