Portage County Treasurer Brad Cromes has announced he is running for county auditor.

Longtime Auditor Janet Esposito, a Republican who has held the office since 1994, is not seeking re-election.

“Janet has a tremendous track record in Portage County, and has set a great example of what constituent service should look like,” said Cromes. “I believe strongly that our next Auditor should carry that example forward, while also working to modernize the office’s operations. I am ready for that challenge, and excited to make my case to voters.”

Cromes, a Democrat, as served as treasurer since 2015. He lists among his accomplishments in office revamping the office's website, posting records online and offering new options for residents to pay their taxes. He also launched a $1 million home improvement program aimed at helping homeowners maintain their properties and developed the Portage County Financial Wellness Fair, a program that was recently recognized by the Ohio Treasurer of State for guiding residents toward financial empowerment.

Cromes said as auditor, he would like to collaborate with other county officials improving cash flow management, partnering with area agencies and nonprofits to keep residents in their homes, and reviewing appraisal processes to enhance fairness.

Cromes is a graduate of Hiram College and The Ohio State University’s John Glenn College of Public Affairs and Moritz College of Law. He lives in Ravenna with his wife, Dr. Lindsey Cromes of Portage Animal Clinic, and their two sons.

Today is the filing deadline for candidates for the May 3 primary.
