I got this guy last night. He closed up sometime last night and its not opening back up. Also, there was little white, clear, stringy stuff hanging out by it. Should I be worried.

I dont have any carpet anemones, but I do have BTA's and rock anemones, they close up for a few reasons, to expell waste is a main one. I would just let it be for a while.

White stringy substances are probably Mesenterial Filaments, supportive and muscular structure found within the body of the anemone. Sometimes a new Haddoni will display a gaping oral opening, exposing the filaments. If water chemistry is in line, SG, nitrates.....temp then the anemone will recover. If a bacterial infection is present or basic water chemistry poor than the anemone is in trouble.
Do the basic chemistry and wait and watch, if the anemone does not recover by the end of the day research Prophylactic Cipro treatment for anemones.

I will say most of the time when you see one doing that its going down hill and fast. I would be ready to pull it out asap bc when it dies you can really trash a tank. I would be interested to know what your water parameters are esp nitrates and phosphates. Carpets are really hardy compared to other types but if your tanks isnt up to par an anemone doesn't stand a chance. I personally hate anemones and talk clients out of them as much as i can. The risk just isnt worth it, they walk around and always end up sitting on your prized coral and when they die they do it in the back of the tank so you dont know for days... then its to late. sorry little bit of a rant :)

It opened up a bit. It's mouth is open a little, is this normal? It's boot is very strong still, is that a sign of good health? What should I be looking for before I take it out and give up on it?

Current image looks fine. As posted prior, a gaping oral opening in an acclimating Haddoni is not unusual in my experience.

The anemone keeps going back and forth. It goes from shrinking to thriving randomly. It goes from a gaping mouth to a closed mouth often. This stringy mucus is coming from the boot now. It doesn't discharge constantly, but it has like three time so far. My water chemistry is perfect. When should I know when to pull it out of the tank? Thanks for the help.

The Haddoni should foot in the sand not on the rock, but leave it there. The mucous from the foot/column is not uncommon.
It may be something about the size of the sand grains. Haddoni like a finer grain size. I have never had Haddoni foot in the rock work, walk around on the rock work but always return to the sand bed.
If the anemone becomes detached and does not foot in the sand bed than there is a problem. If the anemone detaches try to dig a burrow in a lower flow area of tank, place anemone in the burrow.
Right now it's a wait and watch.

Is there any terminal symptoms I should look for. What should be a good indicator that the anemone won't survive. Also is the discharge damaging the tank?

Is this a better position Tahoe? I appreciate the advise. I feed my corals with a dissolved powder called coral frenzy. Is coral frenzy a strong enough source of food for my anemone? I tried to feed it dry krill so it could keep its strength, but it rejects it.

I fed mine chopped up raw shrimp that you get at the seafood counter, scallops and raw fish work well, a piece about the size of a quarter, once every other week.

Looks much better. I have had Haddoni wander for a week or more during acclimation.

Boy this carpet has been a stress inducer, hence the reason I do not keep carpets in mixed reefs any longer.

You've had the anemone roughly 12 days, the anemone should be settled down by now.

I would definitely keep a close eye on it.

When should I pull it out? Any indication that its not going to survive?

At this point I would not pull it quite yet. I would think by now the anemone should being doing better. With that said anemones inflate and deflate and change shape often, it's hard speculate on one image. If the anemone continues to look like that through the rest of the day I would say yeah pull it based on my personal experience with Haddoni.

Large Maroons can stress Anemones to the point of death, just a thought. They just get too passionate and some Anemones do not respond well.
