Info

Seale, 1910

Chaetodon adiergastos, also known as the Panda butterflyfish and Philippine butterflyfish, Bantayan butterflyfish or Teardrop butterflyfish; inhabit coral reefs and occurs in pairs or groups, usually near soft coral. Juveniles are found most solitary on shallow protected reefs or in estuaries, form pairs during breeding. Unlike most butterfly fishes he is active during the night. The Panda Falterfisch is mostly collected in the western Pacific: Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, Java, Indonesia and northwestern Australia. It growth to a maximum of 20cm (7.87 in); his body is white with diagonal dotted brown lines on the sides, all fins are yellow. Chaetodon adiergastos has rounded broad black bands on the face, covering the eye, but not continuous from one side of the body to the other. He hase a separate black spot centered on the forehead. The background colour and the missing spot on caudal peduncle distinguish it from Chaetodon lunula, with which can share the daytime shelter.

Chaetodon adiergastos is very seldome imported for the hobby although they can be easily maintained in a tank.

Remarks:

Butterflyfish are not recommended for reefs as they will pick at or eat a wide variety of corals, fan worms, and other invertebrates. Most Butterflyfish are known to pick at Aiptaisia, a parasitic anemone.
