Info

Ferdina mena Mah, 2017

Ferdina mena was only newly described in the year 2017. The starfish has a maximum diameter of 12 cm. The basic color is white to yellowish. The special feature of this starfish is a red plate between the arms, which looks like a red dot.

The body is covered with large rounded bumps of different sizes on a dark ocher background, which get smaller towards the tips of the arms.

The red-spott starfish is found only in the southwestern Indian Ocean: South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, the Comoros, including Mayotte. It lives on rocky bottom and among corals to a depth of 86 m, but is usually found more frequently at 10 and 40 m.

Feeds highly probable on benthic invertebrates.

The name "mena" means "red", refer to the red spot between each arm

Similar to: Ferdina flavesens and Ferdina sadhaensis ( both species lack the red spot between the arms)
