Info

Kner, 1868

Chaetodon pelewensis also commonly referred as the Dot-and-Dash Butterflyfish, Spotbanded Butterflyfish or Punctato Butterflyfish has a yellow body with diagonal bands of black spots that become solid lines at the rear of the body. An orange bar with a black margin passes through the eye and the caudal fin base is orange.

The Dot-and-Dash Butterflyfish can be found in tropical waters of the Western Pacific, from New Guinea, south to Australia and east to the Tuamoto Islands. It is often seen in pairs as well as in very large schools.

Chaetodon pelewensis inhabits offshore reefs with abundant coral cover and is well known as coral eater and eats as well small invertebrates

Remarks:

Butterflyfish are not recommended for reefs as they will pick at or eat a wide variety of corals, fan worms, and other invertebrates. Most Butterflyfish are known to pick at Aiptaisia, a parasitic anemone.
