Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Discosoma dawydoffi are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Discosoma dawydoffi, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Discosoma dawydoffi, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Info

Discosoma dawydoffi Carlgren, 1943

Discosoma is a genus of cnidarians in the order Corallimorpharia, which are also well known in aquaristics as disc anemones. There is a wide variety of colors, including metallic and fluorescent shades, as well as striped and dotted patterns. Discosoma collect food particles from the water. Some species absorb nutrients produced by zooxanthellae.

According to WoRMS, the genus Discosoma contains only 11 scientifically described species. Discosoma dawydoffi is green to greenish in different nuances with clearly visible pimples. It should reach a disc diameter of 7.5 cm.

A 2006 study found that the disc anemones Discosoma dawydoffi and Discosoma howesii dominate the reef slopes of the Pulau Islands in Malaysia, where both species colonized the dead coral branches (mainly branched Acropora species) and coral debris, forming extensive layers of coherent aggregations.
