Info
Discosoma is a genus of cnidarians in the order Corallimorpharia, which are also well known in aquaristics as disc anemones. There is a wide variety of colors, including metallic and fluorescent shades, as well as striped and dotted patterns. Discosoma collect food particles from the water. Some species absorb nutrients produced by zooxanthellae.
According to WoRMS, the genus Discosoma contains only 11 scientifically described species. Discosoma dawydoffi is green to greenish in different nuances with clearly visible pimples. It should reach a disc diameter of 7.5 cm.
A 2006 study found that the disc anemones Discosoma dawydoffi and Discosoma howesii dominate the reef slopes of the Pulau Islands in Malaysia, where both species colonized the dead coral branches (mainly branched Acropora species) and coral debris, forming extensive layers of coherent aggregations.
