(Snyder, 1908)
Very special thanks for the first photo of Bodianus loxozonus to Jeff Dubosc from France.
He has taken the photo of this beautiful wrasse at New Caledonia.
The wrasse inhabits clear lagoons and seaward reefs, on slopes or along upper part of drop-offs at depths of 3–50 meters.
The fish feed mainly on benthic, hard-shelled, invertebrates such as molluscs and crustaceans.
Synonyms:
Bodianus loxozonus loxozonus (Snyder, 1908)
Lepidaplois loxozonus Snyder, 1908
Lepidaplois trotteri Fowler & Bean, 1923
Classification: Biota > Animalia (Kingdom) > Chordata (Phylum) > Vertebrata (Subphylum) > Gnathostomata (Superclass) > Pisces (Superclass) > Actinopterygii (Class) > Perciformes (Order) > Labridae (Family) > Bodianus (Genus) > Bodianus loxozonus (Species)
Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
