Structure and principle of OLED display

Structure and principle of OLED display

OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diodes) display is a ‘self-luminous display’ using organic materials that self-illuminate when a current flows through them.

Unlike LCD, which expresses colors through liquid crystals and color filters utilizing light sources of backlight, OLED expresses colors through RGB light-emitting materials, which are the three primary colors of light that respond to current applied to the organic light-emitting layer.

OLED is excellent in terms of image quality, thickness, and power consumption as each pixel directly emits light, and its bendable and foldable properties allow it to be utilized in a variety of applications.

Contrast ratio 1,000,000 : 1

Because Samsung OLED™ implements 'Real Black' of less than 0.0005nit, the contrast ratio is close to infinity. The contrast ratio is the difference between the maximum luminance (white) and minimum luminance (black) of a display expressed by a number and is a significant factor in determining image quality as it can express the degree of lightness and darkness in detail.

With a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 or higher, Samsung OLED™ is the best display for realising High dynamic range (HDR) because it can express detailed, deeper and more three-dimensional images.

Diamond Pixel™

Round Diamond Pixel™

Diamond Pixel™ is characterized by increasing the green element and arranging pixels in a diagonal direction of 45 degrees, paying attention to the fact that the human retina is most sensitive to green among red (R), green (G) and blue (B). In particular, in the case of the text where readability is important, straight lines up, down, left and right, as well as diagonal lines are expressed clearly and precisely to realize clear picture quality.

Round Diamond Pixel™ is an image quality optimization technology that improves the diffraction control of sub-pixels compared to the conventional Diamond Pixel™, which is an angled sub-pixel.

Low power consumption, long battery life

This is the image showing the power consumption and light transmissivity of the ECO Series.

"Eco Square OLED (ECO² OLED™)" is a technology that improves power consumption by removing the polarizer and applying a new panel stack structure. In general, when light passes through a polarizer, the brightness decreases by more than 50%. However, it is evaluated as an innovative low-power technology as it can reduce panel power consumption by up to 25%, even at the same brightness by increasing the light transmittance by 33% by applying Eco Square OLED technology. In addition, it is evaluated as an eco-friendly technology because it does not use a polarizing plate, a plastic material.

ECO² OLED™ technology, which opened up the popularization of foldables with innovative low-power technology, won the "Display of the Year" award hosted by SID (Society for Information Display), the world's largest display conference.

ECO² OLED Plus™ in Galaxy Z Fold4 is much improved with unpolarized low-energy technology, demonstrating 37% less power consumption on the panel and 1.6 times higher light transmissivity than the previous ECO² OLED™.

Unlike LCD with an always-on backlight, OLED emits only the necessary pixels, so power consumption is greatly reduced when displaying dark images.

The “Dark mode UI” recently supported by global IT companies is User experience design that darkens the background that does not contain information on the screen. By applying the Dark mode UI to Samsung OLED™, the On Pixel Ratio among all pixels can be significantly reduced, reducing power consumption by about 25% (based on laptops).

Also, dissimilar toLCD that requires a backlight, OLED is about 30% thinner and lighter due to its simple structure. As the panel thickness decreases, the weight and thickness of the smartphone decreases, enabling a slimmer product design and providing an environment optimized for mobile devices such as increasing the battery area in the product.

The phrase “Improved image processing of Under Display Camera” is in the center, and the interior of the Galaxy Z Fold4 camera is visible in the background.

Samsung Display has developed UPC™ (Under Panel Camera) technology that allows the front camera on the top of the product mounted under the panel. The technology secures camera functions by increasing the light transmittance of the panel part where the camera module is located. Normally, the screen is used for displaying general video or images, but when necessary, the camera can be operated to take pictures or videos.

By applying UPC™ technology, a full screen with an invisible camera hole can be realized on the front display, increasing screen immersion and making the product design much cleaner.

With 1.4 times higher cognitive resolution by UPC Plus™ compared to Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Fold4 users can better enjoy news or games without worrying about the camera hole.

Comparison of structures of rigid OLED and flexible OLED

Samsung OLED™ is an innovative flexible, foldable display that provides consumers with new product form factors and usability.

Flexible OLED is a flexible panel completed by applying flexible PI substrate and TEF technology. Unlike glass, which is difficult to process, PI can be made much thinner, thereby reducing the overall weight.

Samsung Display is driving innovations in mobility with its foldable and slidable OLED technology, focusing on not just user experience, but also scaled up design.

Flex Hybrid ™, the world's first unveiled world, is a product that combines two innovation technologies: foldable and slidables. 'Rollable Flex™' can be extended more than five times from 49mm to 254.4mm based on the screen length, and 'Flex in & OUT™' of the new foldable phone concept is all in and out of the inside and outside. It can be 360 degrees.

Human-Friendly display

The proportion of harmful blue light between LCD and Samsung OLED

As the time spent using IT devices increases, the user’s eye strain also increases. In particular, exposure to “blue light” that affects retinal cells while watching a display for a long time can adversely affect eye health.

Samsung OLED™ uses a self-luminous principle to reduce the emission of harmful blue light wavelengths. Samsung OLED™ reduces harmful blue light ratio and maintains color by emitting safe wavelengths, providing a more comfortable viewing environment for users.

Comparison of pollutant emissions

As the time spent using laptops and tablets has increased, consumers' interest in the usage environment of electronic products has also escalated. As a result, consumer demand for eco-friendly products is rising.

Samsung Display's OLED for IT devices has achieved UL's ‘GREENGUARD Gold’ Certification for low chemical emission, providing consumers with an opportunity to choose healthy and safe products.

'GREENGUARD Gold' is an eco-friendly certification awarded to electronic products that meet its volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particle emission standards. It is used as a criterion to determine the impact of the product on the safety of indoor air quality.

Samsung OLED™ reduces the emission time of harmful substances by more than half compared to LCD (based on 4 hours of use), keeping indoor air quality even cleaner.

Sunlight Visibility

Samsung OLED™ presents clear and vivid images anytime and anywhere. In relatively brighter environments such as outdoors, it is hard to recognize text or color accurately since the brightness, color gamut, chroma, and others appear lower than indoors.

With high luminance and low reflectivity, Samsung OLED™ provides superior-quality images even under bright sunlight outdoors. The test in various weather conditions, such as sunny, cloudy, and rainy days, showed approximately 21% higher outdoor visibility compared to the existing displays. By representing high luminance above 1,500 nits and the correct color gamut in a bright environment with over 10,000 lux, Samsung OLED™ is certified for excellence by the UL, a global certification institution.

Hole display

Hole display is one of the technologies applied to the full screen by exposing the front camera or sensor by making a hole in the position where the display screen is driven. For this, advanced display pixel patterning technology and hole processing technology are required. This is because image quality uniformity and light transmittance around the display hole are very important.

Samsung Display’s Hole display boasts high image quality uniformity and transmittance by utilising a simple laminate structure unique to flexible OLEDs. It has been recognised by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global safety certification company, for its excellent image quality performance with no color deviation in “Hole Area Clarity”.

The hole display technology and performance, such as color, brightness, and saturation around the hole were also evaluated to be the best in the industry.

Samsung OLED™ is hogging the limelight as a gaming product due to its fast response time as well as vivid color expression. Samsung Display OLED obtained the “Gaming Performance” certification from SGS, a global certification company, by recording respectively 1.4 mm or less and 15.4 ms or less in Blur length and MPRT, which are important image quality factors when enjoying dynamic and speedy action games.

Samsung OLED™ not only enhances game immersion through smooth screen transitions without blur length, even when playing games with a lot of movement, but also provides an environment where gamers can maximise their performance, where instantaneous control is important.

The fast response speed of Samsung OLED™ along with vivid and clear image quality provides the best display environment for consumers who enjoy dynamic and colourful high-end games.

Cinematic Experience

Samsung OLED™ has obtained the “Cinematic Experience” certification in recognition of its excellent picture quality, which expresses a wide color gamut of more than 120% of the color volume of the American film industry standard (DCI-P3) and perfect black of less than 0.0005 nits.

Premium OLED laptops with high image quality of UHD provide overwhelming image quality when watching movies or videos with the best display performance, such as fast response speed, excellent black expression, high contrast ratio and excellent color gamut.

With high-performance HDR technology, bright scenes are realistically bright, and dark scenes are expressed with deeper blacks, giving you a vivid image as if you were in a small cinema. In addition, by applying ‘Blade Bezel’ technology, the screen-to-body ratio of laptop devices is realized up to 93%, maximizing the immersion of the viewer.

Automotive

As interest in future automobile markets such as electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles increases, vehicle displays are also attracting attention. As automobiles transform from a simple means of transportation to a space that provides users with valuable time, the level of information and entertainment provided to them is also increasing. The types and quantity of displays mounted on vehicles are also gradually increasing.

In-vehicle displays should not only have a high degree of design freedom, but also have high visibility so that the screen can be viewed well even under strong sunlight. It must also provide fast response speed and accurate information, regardless of temperature. OLED technology is being highly regarded as a key component of luxurious automotive interior design as it can scale up design by reproducing absolute black. In particular, Samsung Display has a variety of automotive solutions from flexible to curved designs with competitive pricing.
