Abstract
The Cretaceous and Early Tertiary Basco-Cantabrian Basin (Northern Spain) is interpreted as a "transcurrent fault basin", i. e. the part of the southern Biscay continental margin onto which continues the Biscay Transform Fault. The existence of a pull-apart basin within a left-lateral strike-slip fault system may be deduced from sedimentological data, the occurrence of alkaline magmatites, as well as by the striking of basement highs, of basin axes and of aligned diapirs. This strike-slip fault system is not only controlled by the rifting processes in the Biscay Ocean, but also by distension perpendicular to the transcurrent fault, due to the Iberian Plate motion. This additional distension modifies the subsidence, the sedimentation and the tectonic history of the Basco-Cantabrian Basin. The Late Cretaceous alkaline magmatism is associated with the deep-ranging faults of the Biscay Transcurrent Fault. Paleogeographic maps of the Albian and Campanian of the Basco-Cantabrian Basin have been drawn on the base of a palinspastic reconstruction.
