If the name of a group is called “clothes”, then “clothes “is a HYPERNYM.


And “shirts” and “skirts” are part of that group, then they are HYPONYMS.

Chorus:
The name of the group is the HYPERNYM.
The members of that group are HYPONYMS.
Put them together and what do you get?

If the name of a group is called “birds”, then “birds” is the HYPERNYM.


And “chickens” and “pigeons” are part of that group, then they are HYPONYMS.

WHAT IS IT
What are hyponyms?

Hyponyms are “lower names”. It came from the prefix


hypo– means “under” or “below” and suffix –nym which means
“name”.
Hyponyms are words of more specific meanings than
general words. These are also words that represent different
groups.

Study the following examples below.

1.

The word “beverage” is the general word for “tea”, “coffee” and “milk”.

The words “tea”, “coffee” and “milk” are specific words for the word “beverage”. These specific words are called
hyponyms.

This means that “tea”, “coffee” and “milk” are hyponyms of “beverage”.

2.

The word “fruits” is the general word for “strawberry”, “durian”, “apple”, “pineapple”, “orange” and “rambutan”.

The words “strawberry”, “durian”, “apple”, “pineapple”, “orange” and “rambutan” are specific words for the word
“fruits”. These specific words are called hyponyms.

This means that “strawberry”, “durian”, “apple”, “pineapple”, “orange” and “rambutan” are hyponyms of “fruits”.

Directions: Read carefully the short informative text about Cordillera
Administrative Region (CAR) then complete the following sentences
about it. Write your answers on the blank.

The Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) consists of the


six provinces of Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga and
Mountain Province, and two cities namely Baguio City and Tabuk
City.
The region is rich in natural resources and has abundant
mineral reserves. Gold, copper, silver, and zinc are among the
metallic ores that can be found in the region. Non-metallic
reserves include sand, gravel, and sulfur.
It is rich in ancient culture. It has various festivals, these
includes the Panagbenga or Baguio Flower Festival celebrated
every February in Baguio City, Ulalim Festival in Kalinga, Lang-
ay Festival in Mountain Province, Banaue Imbayah Festival, and
the Tabuk Matagoan Festival.
Cordillera is one of the prime tourist destinations in the
Philippines. It has many spectacular scenic views like Banaue
Rice Terraces in the province of Ifugao, Sumaguing Cave in
Sagada and the mummy caves in Benguet and Mt. Province.
There are four National Parks in the region namely Cassamata
Hill, Mount Pulag- which is the highest mountain in Luzon,
Mount Data, and Balbalasang-Balbalan.
