Access to certain functions of the user interface is protected by a password
and is reserved for trained and authorized personnel. Access to these
functions depends on the user’s profile. Profiles must be managed by
qualified personnel who have received laser safety training.

Instruction manual 8
Safety

■■ Servicing
Before cleaning or servicing the laser system, check that the system is
turned off and is disconnected from the power supply. Ensure that no
liquid or dust enters the controller or head.
The connection cable between the controller and the head must be
securely connected at both ends to ensure that the protection indices
are upheld. For all cleaning and servicing operations, please consult the
user manual provided on the DVD-ROM supplied with the system. For
accessories, please consult the instructions or manual for each accessory.

■■ Radiation hazards
The wavelength of the beam emitted from a CO2 laser is between

N
9.2 μm and 10.8 μm. The light of the laser beam within the infrared part of
IO
the electromagnetic spectrum and is not visible to the naked eye.
AT

Source characteristics for beam divergence:

M

Normal divergence with the lens installed depends upon the focal length.
R

Minimum focal length of 79 mm = 89 mrad full angle after the focal point
FO

Maximum focal length of 288 mm = 24 mrad after the focal point

Normal divergence with the lens removed = 1.9 mrad full angle
IN

Maximum power output: 75 W

CO2 lasers emit powerful infrared radiation. A concentrated beam is
R

sufficiently powerful to cut through certain materials, and the beam is

FO

potentially hazardous even when it is not concentrated.

Radiation can be absorbed by most dielectric substances, like water,
biological tissue, glass and plastic and is instantly absorbed by the first
absorbent material with which it enters into contact.
Radiation can be reflected by smooth metal surfaces, even if they have
been darkened.
Radiation can be concentrated using lenses to make it more effective
for cutting or marking applications. The beam disperses rapidly beyond
the focal point causing the energy density or beam intensity to become
dissipated. The laser opening aperture is clearly marked with a label.
Never expose the eye or the skin to direct or indirect radiation.

9 Instruction manual
Safety

■■ Health / Hygiene / Environment

Maximum noise level: ≤ 80 dB.
Operating temperature: +5°C to +45°C (+41°F to +113°F)
Humidity: 10 - 90 % RH with no condensation.

■■ Eye protection
Since the beam is easily absorbed by water, the cornea and the sclerotic
layer are the main parts of the eye which are at risk from damage and
can suffer irreversible defects and permanent scarring following direct or
indirect exposure to the beam.

N
IO
The severity of the damage to these parts of the eye depends on the level
of concentration or diffusion in the beam and on exposure time.
AT

Permanent eye damage can be caused if laser radiation enters the

M

eyeballs directly or by reflection from a metal surface during procedures

R

requiring access to the laser emitter.

FO

Personnel must wear protective goggles suitable for use with CO2 lasers
IN

when using Class IV lasers.

R

Anyone not wearing appropriate eye protection must be kept out of the
FO

area or room where the unguarded laser system is located.

The following precautions only apply to protection against CO2 laser

radiation, with wavelengths between 9.2 and 10.8 µm.
• All personnel working in the area where the unguarded laser system is
operated must wear protective goggles with side shields for use with CO2
laser radiation.Plastic prescription glasses that do not have protective
side shields or glasses that can be shattered by a high-power beam do
not provide sufficient eye protection. If regular eyewear is used in place of
protective goggles it is at the user’s risk.

Instruction manual 10
Safety

• Contact lenses and half reading glasses do not provide sufficient

protection.
• Glazing providing protection against radiation generally protects people
passing behind the glass.
• Never look directly at the beam source or at a beam that has been
diffused on reflective surfaces.
• The work area must be isolated by means of metal, acrylic or
polycarbonate panelling and have a lockable safety door.
• The laser system must be de-activated automatically by a safety
interlock system when the door is opened. The door interlock circuit must
be designed or configured so that the operator must take action before

N
the circuit is re-activated after opening and then closing the door.
IO
■■ Skin protection
AT

Skin exposed to laser radiation may be subject to burns or cuts which can
M

sometimes cause permanent injury.

R

The following precautions only apply to protection against CO2 laser

FO

radiation, with wavelengths between 9.2 and 10.8 µm:

IN

• Do not place the hands or objects of any kind in the path of the beam.
• Never operate the beam without a target to absorb energy.
R
FO

• Metal objects reflect the beam. Darkened metal objects can also reflect
the beam. Matt or embossed objects diffuse the beam. Items which
absorb the beam heat up.

11 Instruction manual
Safety

■■ Protection against fire risks

Flammable objects including most non-metallic materials can ignite when
they come into contact with the beam.

If printing on potentially flammable surfaces is authorized, it is

recommended that a foam, CO2 or powder extinguisher be located
immediately adjacent to the system (maximum 10 meters).
• Never operate the system in the presence of flammable gases or liquids.
• Never operate the system in the presence of explosive materials.
• Ensure that the system installation includes an adequate safety interlock
system.

N
IO
• The laser system contains a non-replaceable internal lithium ion battery.
The battery can burst or explode, releasing hazardous chemicals. To
AT
reduce the risk of fire or burns, do not disassemble, crush, puncture, or
M

dispose of in fire or water.

R

■■ Fume and vapor hazards

FO

The reactions produced by the laser system can lead to the emission of
IN

hazardous particulates or gases. These by-products can be toxic.

Ensure that all safety instructions are observed before working on
R

material with a laser beam. Also verify compliance with health, safety and
FO

environmental requirements.
• The laser system provides the user with a hot beam similar to a very fine
blowtorch flame. This beam can be used to heat or burn the surface of
certain materials in a controlled manner.
• Some materials decompose chemically when they are heated and
can emit dangerous fumes in the form of gas or solid particles -
examples include polyvinylchloride (PVC) and polycarbonate. Refer to
documentation on the properties of these materials before working on
them, or ask for advice from the manufacturer of the material concerned.

Instruction manual 12
Safety

• The use of an extraction system is recommended for removing fume

emissions. Special filters can be used to filter fumes which are present
at the workplace. These filters must be cleaned and/or replaced as
indicated in the safety instructions. These operations must be performed
in accordance with local and national regulations for the protection of the
environment. Use a Markem-Imaje extraction system to eliminate any
contamination risk or safety and environmental risks.
• Do not attempt to use the beam to work on a material until you have
investigated and fully understood how it reacts to heat.
• Employ a method which provides sufficient protection and allows safe
removal of the fumes produced by working with the laser system.
• If you want to use a beam on plastic material, filter the vapors caused by

N
the marking operation downwards.
IO
• If you want to use a beam on PVC, a number of precautions should be
AT
applied when removing fumes. The chemical reaction generated by heating
M

and the humidity in the air produces hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid
is dangerous for both the operator and the laser system. Use a Markem-
R

Imaje extraction system to remove PVC fumes.

FO

13 Instruction manual
Safety

■■ Electrical hazards
Installation, servicing and repair work should only be performed by
Markem-Imaje-qualified personnel or electrical technicians following
consultation with the Markem-Imaje after-sales department or an
authorized representative.
• Disconnect the laser system from the mains power supply before carrying
out any work which requires the removal or replacement of a part.
• Never remove the laser covers. Removal of the covers exposes high
voltage. Removal of inner covers from the laser head or from the optical
assembly could allow the laser beam to escape.
• The area around the laser system must be kept dry.

N
• The area around the laser system must remain well lit to allow personnel
to work safely. IO
AT
• Do not use the laser system if the main power supply cable is damaged
or frayed.
M

• The laser must be serviced and inspected at regular intervals in

R

accordance with Markem-Imaje’s recommendations.

FO

■■ Safety functions

The laser system incorporates various safety functions. It is necessary for

R

the end user to have access to these functions within a complete system
FO

installation to meet safety standards.

■ Remote interlock
The laser system has one remote interlock connector on the bottom of
the controller. The remote interlock connector permits the connection of
an external interlock control (for example, external interlock control on a
protective guarding/enclosure to protect from Class IV radiation).
■ Emission Indicator Lights
For safety reasons, it is required that red LED emission indicator lights
remain lit while the laser is enabled. There are three emissions indicator
LED’s which are located on the top of the controller at bottom right, on
the laser scan head and on the user interface (see warning label and
indicator locations).

Instruction manual 14
Safety

CAUTION: To assure proper performance of the user interface emission

indicator LED, ‘Yes’ must be selected in the "Local Interface Connected"
setting located in the "Tools" menu.
There is also a red status LED on the back of the laser print head (where
the umbilical connects) that indicates printing status - this LED is not
considered an emissions indicator because it is not monitored.
The red LED emission indicators and messages on the user interface
screen are visible through eyewear designed for the wavelength of the
emitted radiation.
■ Emission stop button
The laser system includes an emission stop button on the controller.
■ Key-operated start/stop switch

N
The laser system is fitted with a switch key on the controller that supplies
power to the system. IO
AT
■ Manual restart
The laser system is provided with a manual reset to enable resumption of
M

accessible laser radiation emission after interruption of emission caused

R

by use of the remote interlock connector or by an interruption of electrical

FO

mains power.
■ Warning labels
IN

Warning labels must be affixed to certain parts of the laser system. These
labels indicate the conditions which could expose the user to radiation
R

emission.
FO

Apart from the laser symbol itself which does not include any wording, all
labels are to be written in the language indicated by the user.

■■ Changing filter sets on the controller

Note: There are four filter covers on the C350 controller and two filter
covers on the C150 controller.
Replacement filters are packaged in sets of two for ease of replacement.
Ingress protection is contingent upon proper installation and use of filters
in controllers.

1 Open the filter covers located on the right side and left side of
the controller. Each opening contains two filters.
