Safety
Before using the printer, please read and adhere closely to these
instructions. Repairs must be only performed by qualified personnel
with the appropriate training.
■■ Liability
Markem-Imaje shall not be liable for any damage or injury resulting from any
failure to follow these safety instructions, as well as good manufacturing
practices and safety standards that are generally applicable in the
industry, when installing, using or servicing Markem-Imaje equipment.
Any user who modifies or repairs Markem-Imaje equipment, uses
consumables, spare parts or accessories other than those supplied by
N
Markem-Imaje, or fails to comply with Markem-Imaje specifications shall
IO
have sole responsibility for the consequences thereof.

use with the specific Markem-Imaje equipment may harm the equipment
and cause performance failures.
Because Markem-Imaje equipment is tested with Markem-Imaje
consumables and spare parts for conformity with certain regulations and
safety standards, use of non-Markem-Imaje consumables and spare parts
also may be inconsistent with testing conditions and affect compliance of
the equipment with certain standards.
The user shall bear all risks associated with use of unsuitable consumables
and spare parts.
This equipment is certified in accordance with the requirements for CE
marking.

■■ Training
Training is mandatory for all personnel responsible for installing, operating
or servicing the equipment. Markem-Imaje or authorized Markem-Imaje
dealerships offer training courses on the installation, operation and
servicing of Markem-Imaje products.
■■ Applications for laser equipment
The CO2 laser system described in this document is designed for marking
material by infrared radiation in an industrial environment. The equipment is
a Class IV laser and it is therefore recommended that a laser safety officer
is appointed and that the operator is advised accordingly.
Caution: Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures
other than those specified may result in hazardous radiation.
Markem-Imaje will not accept liability in connection with any damage or
N
injury.
IO
Markem-Imaje will not accept liability for any damage or injury occurring
AT
after modifications have been made to the equipment without Markem-
Imaje’s written approval.
M
Do not use the beam to heat food products, as this could cause injury or
produce toxic vapours, fumes or substances.

■■ Installation
Installation must be performed by a Markem-Imaje
technician. Any person modifying the installation
shall be wholly liable for such modifications.
The laser system must be installed in a location
with sufficient ventilation and not adjacent to any
sources of heat.
The base must be fixed to the floor.
The laser system installation on the production line
must not generate any risks for personnel.
The laser system must be connected to a grounded
single phase mains electrical supply, using the
N
lead supplied with the laser system. The lead
has a standard mains plug which must be easily
accessible at all times.

■■ Use
FO
The operator’s work station should face the user interface and controller.
During use, the controller must be closed and locked. No components
should be disconnected from or reconnected to the controller while the
system is powered on. Connections should be made only with the system
powered off.
Normal use of the laser system is described in the following pages and
in the user manual provided on the DVD-ROM supplied with the system.
Access to certain functions of the user interface is protected by a password
and is reserved for trained and authorized personnel. Access to these
functions depends on the user’s profile. Profiles must be managed by
qualified personnel who have received laser safety training.
Instruction manual 8
Safety
■■ Servicing
Before cleaning or servicing the laser system, check that the system is
turned off and is disconnected from the power supply. Ensure that no
liquid or dust enters the controller or head.
The connection cable between the controller and the head must be
securely connected at both ends to ensure that the protection indices
are upheld. For all cleaning and servicing operations, please consult the
user manual provided on the DVD-ROM supplied with the system. For
accessories, please consult the instructions or manual for each accessory.
■■ Radiation hazards
The wavelength of the beam emitted from a CO2 laser is between
N
9.2 μm and 10.8 μm. The light of the laser beam within the infrared part of
IO
the electromagnetic spectrum and is not visible to the naked eye.
AT
Normal divergence with the lens installed depends upon the focal length.
R

Safety
■■ Eye protection
Since the beam is easily absorbed by water, the cornea and the sclerotic
layer are the main parts of the eye which are at risk from damage and
can suffer irreversible defects and permanent scarring following direct or
indirect exposure to the beam.
N
IO
The severity of the damage to these parts of the eye depends on the level
of concentration or diffusion in the beam and on exposure time.
AT
Personnel must wear protective goggles suitable for use with CO2 lasers

absorb the beam heat up.

IO
• The laser system contains a non-replaceable internal lithium ion battery.
The battery can burst or explode, releasing hazardous chemicals. To

environmental requirements.
• The laser system provides the user with a hot beam similar to a very fine
blowtorch flame. This beam can be used to heat or burn the surface of
certain materials in a controlled manner.
• Some materials decompose chemically when they are heated and
can emit dangerous fumes in the form of gas or solid particles -
examples include polyvinylchloride (PVC) and polycarbonate. Refer to
documentation on the properties of these materials before working on
them, or ask for advice from the manufacturer of the material concerned.

• If you want to use a beam on PVC, a number of precautions should be

■■ Electrical hazards
Installation, servicing and repair work should only be performed by
Markem-Imaje-qualified personnel or electrical technicians following
consultation with the Markem-Imaje after-sales department or an
authorized representative.
• Disconnect the laser system from the mains power supply before carrying
out any work which requires the removal or replacement of a part.
• Never remove the laser covers. Removal of the covers exposes high
voltage. Removal of inner covers from the laser head or from the optical
assembly could allow the laser beam to escape.
• The area around the laser system must be kept dry.
N
• The area around the laser system must remain well lit to allow personnel
to work safely. IO

Warning labels must be affixed to certain parts of the laser system. These
labels indicate the conditions which could expose the user to radiation

Apart from the laser symbol itself which does not include any wording, all
labels are to be written in the language indicated by the user.

■■ Recycling
Disposal of used batteries and accumulators (applicable in EU
countries and other European countries with selective waste
collection systems).
These symbols indicate that once these electric and electronic appliances
have reached the end of their life, they cannot be treated as simple
household waste. The same applies for any batteries and accumulators
within the appliances. By making sure that these items are disposed of
N
in an appropriate manner, you are playing an active role in preventing
IO
potential negative consequences to the environment and to human health
AT
that might result from improper disposal. Recycling materials also helps
to save natural resources.
M
recycle them, you can be certain that all built-in parts will be dealt with

correctly.
For all other scenarios and for how to safely remove the batteries,
IN
accumulators and other materials from your appliance, please refer to the
user manual or contact your Markem-Imaje representative.

FO
■■ Laser integration
If the laser system is incorporated with a machine, please consult the
instruction manual for that machine before working on the laser system.
If the laser system is incorporated with a machine or is assembled with
other machines in a way which forms a machine covered by Directive
2006/95/EC:
The laser may not operate independently
The laser must not be commissioned until the end machine in which it is
incorporated has been declared to comply with the relevant provisions of
the Machinery Directive and other European directives applicable to the
end machine.
Ensure that the protective guarding/enclosure is made from non-reflective
materials appropriate for the wavelength of the laser.
