Diet: Distichopora relies on microplankton and nutrient absorption for food.
Natural History: The Distichopora are generally found in shelters and overhangs, prefering shaded areas and higher amounts of nutrients. They grow their skeleton perpendicular to the flow of water. Their skeletons are easily recognized because the branch in only one plane. They do not have the powerful sting of fire corals. Lace Corals are not photosynthetic, nor are they hermatypic (reef-building). Common colors are purple, blue, and yellow.
Husbandry: The Lace Corals are reported to thrive better if they are housed in nutrient-rich water. They may not grow when competing against a protein skimmer for dissolved foods. They benefit from a steady and strong current because of their reduced polyps.
