Natural History: The Black Tang is a rare aquarium fish and is uncommon on reefs. It is found in a variety of reef zones from lagoons to protected reef areas and is likely to hybridize with yellow tangs. It favors hair algae and will ingest bits of sand as it feeds. It has pharyngeal teeth in its throat that it uses to grind algae. The sand likely aids in digestion.
Husbandry: The Black Tang is reported to be hardy in captivity. It is peaceful except with other tangs, especially with other Zebrasoma tangs.
