Biography

  • David Christian Bongartz was born in Aachen, Germany on the 4th of September 1980. Under the stage name David Garrett, he is one of the world’s most respected violinists, as renowned for his classical concerts as he is for his numerous crossovers with the world of pop and rock.

A lot is made of the youth of today’s pop stars. Look at the singles charts and you’re likely to find a whole lot of artists who are legally unable to do some of the things you’ll hear about in the other songs. From getting utterly wasted on everything under the sun to driving. However, artists in the world of classical music must look at them and laugh themselves silly. If you want to be a great classical musician, you’d better know your major scales by heart before you know the alphabet that well, and if you haven’t learnt your minor scales by the time you’ve started school you can forget about it. David Garrett is a perfect example of this. Lorde might have been performing covers on national radio by the time she was 13, but Garrett was a prize winning violinist by the time he was five.

What makes this more incredible is how it wasn't even going to be him playing originally. The first violin that Garrett’s father bought was for his older brother, but the four year old Garrett pretty much immediately took a shine to the instrument and was winning competitions within the year. By seven he was enrolled at the Lübeck Academy of Music where he excelled as something of a prodigy, he spent five years there and at the age of 12 he was taken under the wing of legendary Polish violinist Ida Haendel. This was, of course, after receiving his first Stradivarius violin the year before when he was 11, by this point he’d become renowned for his talents, and he made his first two CD’s by the time he was 13. He was also tapped for concerts on TV in his native Germany and The Netherlands.

Now, this is all extremely impressive but it could also be where it stops. It would be nothing new to hear about the child prodigy captivating a country for a summer, before either folding due to the pressure of it all or said country losing all interest but neither of those happened. Garrett went from strength to strength, performing with the Munich Philharmonic at 16, enrolling at London’s Royal College Of Music, studying at Juilliard a couple of years later (which he paid for by modelling, as if he wasn’t infuriating enough already), and it only got even more astonishing in his twenties, where he was able to set the world record for fastest violin player in the world when he was 26. The man is more than just a talent, he’s pretty much a force of nature and in the classical world he’s still practically a baby.

The best is yet to come from David Garrett, and if his seventeen studio albums, four DVD’s and eight awards are anything to go by, his best is going to be incredibly special indeed. Highly recommended.

DAVID GARRETT - EXPLOSIVE TOUR CONCERT IN ZURICH

    (Monday, December 5, 2016)

This concert was a genuine gem for true music fans who have their ears spot on!

David started the show with DANGEROUS from his last album EXPLOSIVE in a superbly dynamic and truly “explosive” performance together with his dynamite Rock Band and the fantastic Frankfurt Philharmonic Orchestra and along with a really brilliant crew of Dancers! The lighting, lasers, fire-works and the Pyro technical fire in the show, taking place on a 360° round stage, were immensely professional… and the sound quality was brilliant! David Garrett proved once more that he is one of the most talented and vastly creative musicians of our times who combines a superb choice of fantastic musical styles and musical masterpieces, be it in crossover or in classical! Although his young age, David Garrett is not only a master virtuoso on his violin, but also, is he a fantastically creative and versatile composer and musical arranger! It is amazing listening to his music as he combines “music of the future and music of the past” so well, and awakens different styles of music in refreshing new ways! The song “Music” by John Miles was again performed fabulously by David that night! It really had sounded as if this particular song was written for him. Music seems to be his first love in any way! David included great compositions from his EXPLOSIVE album into the show, which were real musical treats! The tracks were a brilliant combination of e.g. Electronic Dance Music spiced up with Rock, Pop, R&B, Hip Hop… etc. always being accompanied masterfully by brilliant orchestra arrangements! Chapeau! David also played various film scores, including the track ADVENTURE ISLAND that is inspired by film music scores of favourite film music composers such as Hans Zimmer - a really awesome and thrilling performance by David! I hope he is back for more film music… A most impressive performance was the Rock Music duel with David on his Violin and Franck on his E-Guitar! They really had us rock our socks off that night! The “winner” of the duel was, as David put it: “brilliant music!” David is actually able to create new originals that are surprising discoveries. I think that some of the Rock Anthem versions arranged and performed by David are even better than their originals! At the concert night, David also played a most intriguing and groovy version of a Raging Against The Machine track. A more classical piece by David was a breath-taking excerpt of the “storm” from The Summer out of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons… featuring heavenly rocking E-Guitars… loved it! No one wanted him to stop playing that night! He finished the show with an amazingly beautiful version of “One Moment in Time”. David is a true musical inspiration for young and old! As a great music Fan I must say that this concert was a fantastic musical highlight for me this year! Thanks to you David, to your brilliant musicians and your great team and family!

  • It was an amazing concert full of emotions... The music, the songs, the

presentation, the light, the gorgeous visual backdrop, the atmosphere —

there was a lot of everything, a lot more than I expected.

David Garrett was extremely inspired and greatly performed the best

musical pieces from the past ten years of crossover concerts.

A few times Maestro went to the hall and played the violin among the

    audience, which was very exciting.

The second part started in a quite stressful way for me and obviously, for

the whole audience. David performed Asturias while being high above the

    stage.

Everyone in the audience got motionless and held their breath until he got

    back to the ground!

David is quite a character. They put a small sofa on the stage and the

musician took his time to choose the “guest” (everyone hoped to be

chosen), then he fixed his eyes on a boy aged nine and invited him to the

stage so that to play exactly for him.

The little guest was happy and waved his hand to the audience. And David

did the same but during the composition.

It was funny to watch them, the child expressed his joy and emotions all the

time and David along with everyone in the audience was amused by it.

But... all good things quickly come to an end. And so was this concert —

the last one in the first part of the tour.

The audience rampaged. The public didn't want to let the musician go and

the ovation didn't stop when David had already left the stage. The concert

went in the same breath, and they wanted it to be continued. The

unbelievable musician gave a real entertainment that everyone wants to be

    given again and again.

Special thanks to the orchestra (by the way, they shot a confetti popper

during the curtain call as it was their last concert in the tour) and to the

    whole David Garrett's team!

  • From Mozart to Matallica, from Beethoven to Queen, David Garret can perform music of every Genre without any boundaries in a wonderful and unique way. This talented violinist leaved us impressed with his show last night at Auditorio Banamex Monterrey: "Master of Puppets" (Metallica), "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus) , "Viva la vida" ( Coldplay ) , "Smells Like Teen Spirit " (Nirvana), “Lacrimosa” (Mozart), “5th symphony” (Beethoven), were some of the songs we had the pleasure to listen. His band was amazing too, very dynamic and versatile ; they made the show even more delightful with the arrangements for every song. An unexpected thing of the nigh was that David played "Your Song" (Elton John) for a girl fan that went on stage, he got on his knee to play for her! he also played while hugging her!!… The reaction of all of us was very spontaneous, the screams they grew at times and they were very evocative of our feelings... At that precise moment we all wanted to be her (yes I’m jealous). At the very beginning and during the show Garret took the time to go and play while he was walking through the people that attended this amazing show… We loved it!

  • It’s always important for an artist to have some genuine credibility, and perhaps that’s something that goes a long way towards explaining the success of David Garrett; the German can claim to have earned his reputation from various different spheres of the musical world. On the one hand, around the turn of the century, he studied at the prestigious Juilliard College in New York for five years - so his classical chops certainly aren’t in doubt - but at the same time, the manner in which he’s dabbled with rock music lends a whole new angle to the way people view him as a musician; this is a classical violinist who has made his name with a cover of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana. That song is unsurprisingly a staple of his live sets, which are unusually energetic for a classical musician; he brings a rock and roll edge to classic compositions, often evern interpolating them into contemporary rock covers on stage. Still only just thirty-four, his youthful vigour and forward-thinking approach ensure that he’s widely viewed as one of the genre’s most promising talents.

  • I was in Rome from Chicago to watch the EXPLOSIVE show at the Palalottomatica. He was really superb, not a surprise but, sorry there is a BUT, for many of the pieces the click trck was louder than the music.

Besides, when one is aware that there are 3 guitarists, a keyboard player and a dummer, those are the accompaniments your ears come to expect. So when you hear another instrument like cello or saxophone, it becomes unrealistic and then you know parts of it is not live. It ruins the passion of the track.

And David, I know you love jeans and T-shirts and you look handsome in them...but for a show, will you dress up with more care and thought as though you really look forward to being there instead of presenting yourself as though you just grabbed whatever was clean.

For goodness, David, I dressed up as though I am are going on a date with the star violinist!!! Sorry, but I still love you and would go again one more time.

  • I saw the first and the second show of the UNLIMITED-World Tour and it was incredible.

Wonderful musicians on stage, wonderful music and a adorable video show on a huge LED-screen.

I know, I'm a little bit crazy about Davids music. I attend Davids concerts over 30 times over the last years all over the world.

So I must say, that the UNLIMITED-Show is the best show he ever played during the last 10 years.

I hope the UNLIMITED-tour will be a huge success for David and I hope a lot of people all over the world will have memorable moments in the show nights.

  • It was an unforgettable show! David covers into a warm and cozy blanket of the music at the first seconds, you hear his violin. All the songs already in your heart and he let them bloom. The band in the whole brings such emotions that heart beats faster and goosebumps run over the body.

The most adorable moment was that in the hall was David's mom and its a mother's day today, so he played a song to her while she was sitting next to him. I almost cried out loud cause of the sweetness of the moment.

    A bientôt j'espère.

  • The concert in Skopje, North Macedonia, was good. I say good, not perfect or fantastic, not because David Garrett and his band - they were more than amazing, as usual. But the hall in Skopje it was not so good as othert I've been and definitely there was not so good sound. The public also was not so emotionial as other concerts. I traveled from Bulgaria, especially for the concert. I liked it, but definitely not one of his best shows.
