Biography

  • Formed in 1980, Overkill is a thrash metal band that hails from New Jersey, U.S. They are known to be the innovators of the thrash metal movement on the east coast in the 1980s and have sold over 16 million records worldwide.

The original lineup of the band consisted of Rat Skates, D.D. Verni, Bobby Gustafson, and Bobby Blitz. Their demo called “Power in Black” which was released in 1983 caught the attention of the heavy metal label Megaforce Records. Owner Jon Zazula signed them to the label and their debut album “Feel the Fire” was released in 1985.

After touring for a few years with bands like Anthrax and Slayer to audiences of raving fans, Overkill recorded a second album. In 1987 Megaforce Records became associated with Atlantic Records and Overkill’s sophomore album “Taking Over” came out, with a more organized structure and lengthier songs. The single “In Union We Stand” became the first song to have a video and helped to promote the band via television.

As Overkill developed over the years, they became popular on the charts and MTV. Their album “Under the Influence” came out in 1988 and charted at No. 147 on the Billboard Top 200. The single “Hello From the Gutter” was frequently played on MTV’s television show “Headbangers Ball.” The hit “Elimination” on the 1989 album “The Years of Decay” became well-loved on “Headbangers Ball” and propelled Overkill to commercial success.

The main songwriter Bobby Gustafson left before the fifth album “Horrorscope” was released in 1991. The mood of the album was darker and less upbeat than earlier work, but Overkill proved they were still a relevant heavy metal band in the 1990’s. To date, Overkill has recorded over 17 studio and live-recorded albums. The band cites Black Sabbath, Kiss, The Ramones, Motorhead, and Manowar as significant musical influences.

Live reviews

  • Overkill

Overkill’s live performance is bound to rattle your mind and rock your world. Although they haven’t quite received the commercial success of other notable thrash metal bands like Slayer, Metallica, and Anthrax, they are still a thrill to see live and you most likely will get the chance to see them at an intimate venue when they come through your town. Overkill’s music attacks you like a brute force during their show. They crank up their loud distorted guitars playing them at rapid speeds, which stimulate the audience with excitement. The drums are pounded with intense strength and the clash of the cymbals resonates throughout the whole venue. Lead singer, Bobby Ellsworth, is full of energy during his performance, often running around stage shirtless and yelling into the microphone like a crazy ghoul with an operatic like voice.

Overkill is an incredibly prolific band having already released eighteen studio albums that have consistently garnered good reviews and have followed the same rapid force style that they are so great at creating. An Overkill concert has a fierce characteristic about it. Everyone in the crowd is dressed in black and are starting up mosh pits to the heavy metal, thrash rock that is blaring through the whole venue. The drums are positioned on an elevated platform where the drummer blasts away on the double bass drums, and the stage is covered with fog while red lights of hell shine through in the background. Overkill plays a diverse setlist performing songs from many different albums in their discography. You can expect to rock out to all their classic hits from the eighties or you can start up a riot to some of the songs they perform from their newest album, White Devil Armory.

  • Overkill Stands the Test of Time. The first full night of Rock and Shock 2014 in Worcester, MA proved more than successful for its headlining act Overkill. The New Jersey-based metal group still know how to deliver a great performance with plenty of screaming guitars and singer Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth's vocals as they ever oscillated between wails and cathartic growls. The backdrop consisting of a bat with a skull's head along with the laser effects made this more than a satisfying performance. Again with this artist, although I've been to their concerts multiple times, it is not my area of expertise regarding the songs played, but certainly enjoyed their thrash metal fusion reminiscent of vintage Metallica in many ways! What I enjoyed especially as well was the usage of bright lights during Ellsworth's multiple entrances and exits. These brilliant flashes of light made for an illusion of doing appearing and disappearing acts as he traversed the stage. . .a real ball of fire! Members of an extremely enthusiastic audience took to moshing and crowd surfing, truly kicking it "old school." And the concert would not have been complete without Ellsworth's interaction with the crowd including for the encore for F*** You, with hundreds of exhilarated fans waving their middle fingers in the air during the chorus! Great times!

  • Thrash metal at its best. While I did not get a chance to see the first two opening bands, I got there in time to catch Havok, Crowbar, and the Almighty Overkill! Havok was absolutely impressive! They played a setlist that was much better then the songs they picked for their last couple of videos. They shred and placed an amazing performance. Crowbar was a good change of pace with a nice dooom sludge to rock your face off. Of course, Overkill put a technically sharp brutal performance like the well experienced machine they have becomes to be. Their new drummer is super talented and the band is as solid as ever. Overkill is like a fine wiskey, they more is aged, the better they get. Absolutely recommend this tour and bands to anyone. Long live Thrash metal!

  • OverKill never disappoints for a show. Despite being "up there" in age, they bring the night like few others, even from bands much younger. They played a good variety of songs but also kept in the staples. I was very happy.

Supporting bands were mixed. I'm not much of a CrowBar fan, but they played loud and clear. HaVoK absolutely crushed it and once again, I was disappointed that they didn't play more. They could easily last a two-hour set with all the great songs they have.

Because of inaccurate reporting of concert show times, I came too late to catch really any of Black Fast, but I heard very positive things from others.

  • Great show at the Granada in Lawrence. They opened up with Mean Green Killing Machine and went into lots of old stuff, with a little new mixed in. Feel the Fire, Hammerhead, Goddamn Trouble, Emerald, Nice Day... for a Funeral, Infectious, Ironbound, Our Finest Hour, Armorist.. and of course they played Elimination and Fuck You. Think the show went around 80-90 minutes. The pit got a little crazy, with 3 or 4 people getting hauled out of the show, but it was a great atmosphere for the most part. There was one loudmouth motherfucker but it seems there always is.

  • American thrash is the best. I mean, these guys are 55+ y/o, in ( mainly ) good physical form, still releasing new records that sound as interesting as it gets. Overkill and Flotsam and Jetsam did really great job on stage, I enjoyed the show a lot! There were also two European bands.
