  Chemistry is an odd thing. Some bands seem to need the right combination of very specific people playing in order to be worth a damn, while some are able to just create it out of thin air whenever it’s needed. With 26 past members and only one founding member still playing in the band, Iced Earth are unquestionably one of the latter bands. While the accusation that they can’t call themselves the same band that formed in Tampa, Florida 1985 remains ever-present and somewhat accurate, Iced Earth guitarist and songwriter Jon Schaffer seems to be able to create great album after great album with every line-up that he puts together, and it goes without saying that with every line-up comes an utterly astonishing live show. The combination of the grit and energy of thrash metal with the flights of fancy of power metal is one that will always sound amazing live and Iced Earth never disappoint whoever is playing onstage. Each and every one of the performers on stage can cycle through thirty years and eleven studio albums worth of thunderous, complex and intelligent heavy metal like they were born to do it. Which is just as well since more often than not they do it for two and a half hours a night, which is a long time to spend with any band but Iced Earth are worth every moment. They might just be the perfect synthesis of everything ridiculous, awesome and life affirming about heavy metal, so it goes without saying that seeing them tear it up live is an unforgettable experience.

• I think I might own one Iced Earth album although I can't recall if I played it more than once. That is the sort of mindset I had going in, but I am glad I did. They started off with some newer heavier hitting material before doing back catalog stuff which set the tone well for me to get into them. Some of the aspects I seriously appreciate from them live is that whoever did the live mixing was spot f'ing on. The drums were crushing and that dude can play. The guitar tones did the opposite of a lot of shows, under emphasizing the upper mids a tad while boosting the lower mids to give it some weight without overdoing it so you could still hear all the harmonies clearly. The vocalist was also not over prominent. The only thing I would ding was the vocalist was using some sort of vocal effects which was mildly annoying. Still thought the whole of the show was pretty great and they were really into it. Best song for me was Seven Headed Whore. 8/10

• Was freaking awesome... Brutal ever... Great energy and such powerful show... very good quality of song...with vicking Jon Schaffer birthday's celebration and party with the kids on the stage... Was super cool... Can't wait to see again
