Stuttgart 21: Railway Hub Untertuerkheim and S-Bahn tunnel

The railway infrastructure company SPITZKE is starting 2022 with two major projects. We have already reported on our services for the new CBI for the S-Bahn 1 on the outskirts of Berlin. For the second major project, we take a look south: The new organization of the railway hub as a part of the Stuttgart-Ulm railway project. This huge transport and urban development project will be carried out in many different construction phases and construction lots. In the fall, SPITZKE was awarded two important lots from planned section 1.7:

  • Lot 3: Railway hub Untertürkheim
  • Lot 4: Electrification of the S-Bahn in access tunnels to the main station

These projects are combined into one major project: Stuttgart 21. However, both have very different tasks and services.

 

Lot 3: Railway Hub Untertürkheim

Trains will be parked, cleaned and repaired at the new Untertürkheim railway hub. It will be connected to Stuttgart’s mains station via two lines. There will be 27 sidetracks on the 1.5 km long service station, with a combined length of 7.4 km. There will also be facilities for exterior and interior cleaning, maintenance and refueling.

Our Leer branch will erect, among other things, around 80 catenary masts and 151 angled masts from our subsidiary MuR-STAHLBAU. In addition, 8,000 m of catenaries as well as the new installation of 23,000 m of longitudinal catenaries and 3,400 m of reinforcement lines will be built. These services will be carried out by our equipment/​electrical engineering division. ELEKTROTECHNISCHE PLANUNG SPITZKE GmbH (EPS) will also be involved.

Lot 4: Electrification of the S-Bahn in access tunnels to Stuttgart’s main station

Lot 4 is also currently in an intensive planning phase. The tunnels which need to be electrified start at Stuttgart’s main station (underground). They end in Feuerbach and Bad Cannstatt. Around 30 masts will be erected as well as the modification and adjustment of 2,000 m of catenary. In addition, our e-technology experts will install 600 support points. These will hold a total of 10,600 m of catenary and railway power lines which are being built or attached to the tunnel ceiling.

The technical challenges are the special feature of both construction projects. The head of our technical office has to dive very deeply into the details, in collaboration with EPOS and other design offices.

Lot 3 in the major project Stuttgart 21 will run in seven construction phases until 2025. Lot 4 will be executed in an intense construction period until the summer of 2023.
