Harder(?) Better. Faster(?) Stronger.

Wasn't in the market for a new e-HH pedal, but noticed that my FD-8 had died when practicing two weeks before a gig where I always play electronically. Didn't want to muck about with the Vaseline trick or wholesale replacement of the FD-8's sensor pad (had done that w/my old TD-1 and it was never satisfying) and risk it not holding up to performance stresses. The reviews here convinced me to spend the extra $ over and above Sweetwater's FD-8 price for the FD-9.

Holy smokes, what a difference.

The FD-9 is Harder — OK, no it isn't, but Daft Punk is stuck in my head.

The FD-9 is Better — at tracking my smaller HH foot motions than the FD-8 was. I switch back and forth between acoustic and electronic kits depending on the time of day and the gig, and the 9 brings my e-kit's feel MILES closer to the feel of my 25yo+ acoustic hat setup. I didn't even touch the sensitivity settings on my TD-11; just plugged the 9 in and was instantly happy. Its mechanical noise is maybe 1/10 as loud as the 8, which is important in shows where I'm playing electronic because the venue is tiny and the audience is right on top of the band.

The FD-9 is Higher — meh, not by much. Whatever. Daft Punk!

The FD-9 is Stronger — the mass of its base is probably at least double that of the sheet metal plate and plastic shroud of the 8. Its resistance comes from a double spring similar to a nice kick pedal. Not only does the build quality inspire faith that it'll last a long time, but its mass helps it STAY PUT during performance, which I cannot say for the 8. In a 3-hour show I'd "recapture" my wandering FD-8 at least half a dozen times; at the 9's inaugural outing last Saturday I moved it once after setup, to reposition for comfort.

Cons: It didn't keep me from rushing, which is a constant fight when I play electronic. It didn't silence the mechanical stick noise of the rest of the kit. It hasn't reversed climate change. Guess those are my job.

The one real concern I have is that in cramped quarters (like last Saturday) the inevitable pile of wiring slack near this thing made me wonder if it was going to guillotine through the e-drums' cable harness or some mic cables. Preventing that will just require planning though; no shade on the FD-9.

Conclusion: If you need an electronic HH pedal, buy this one. If you're looking at the FD-8, stop. Spend the extra $ and get the FD-9 instead. They're not even in the same league.

Why did I wait so long?

The original hi-hat pedal that came with my Roland TD-9 (the FD-8) never worked well. It was always the weak link in the whole system. It was noisy and banged when you pushed on it and was just really difficult to make good hi-hat sounds with. It would often get really bad in its responsiveness and finally break. I fixed it a couple times with the famous "Vasoline Fix", but it finally failed so completely that I had to get a new pedal. I wish I hadn't waited so long!

The FD-9 is amazing! It feels just like my real hi-hat used to feel. It is smooth as silk, whisper quiet, and deliciously sensitive. The sounds that are now coming out of my kit are ones I've never heard before! It is spectacular. I was honestly about to get rid of the whole set and this pedal has completely turned it around. Couldn't be happier.

No Squeak, great Pedal

Was concerned with the reviews about squeaking of the pedal. There is absolutely none. Maybe earlier versions? Using it with a Handsonic HPD20. Adds incredible dimension. Highly recommed.

A better pedal

I bought this pedal to be an upgrade to the basic pedal that came with my Roland TD1-DMK drum set.
This pedal works great! It's quiet, comfortable, and gives much better control over the volume.
It also looks a lot better than the original unit it replaced. I am very pleased with it.

Roland FD9 Hi Hat Control Pedal

Really nice, heavy duty pedal.
Works great!!!
Music background: Working drummer, 3 bands

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
