Born on March 24, 1951, Tommy Hilfiger grew up in New York state.

He graduated from Elmira Free Academy in 1969, and briefly attended the Jefferson-Lewis BOCES campus.

During his first summer post-grad, Tommy worked at a clothing store on Cape Cod.

With the money he saved, he opened up his own clothing store - the People's Place in Elmira.

At first, Tommy stocked his store with clothes from New York City but started to design his own shortly after opening.

After People's Place went bankrupt, Tommy began taking classes with a focus on the fashion industry.

He moved to the city, launching the Tommy Hilfiger company in 1979.

By 1985, the designer received financial support from The Murjani Group and officially launched the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation.
