MORE ABOUT MARAZION

It says a lot for the far West of Cornwall that something as spectacular as St Michael's Mount is just one of our jewels. Walk across at low tide, or catch a boat from Marazion. St Michael's Mount is a real-life fairy-tale castle, still lived in by the St Aubyn family and managed by the National Trust where you can immerse yourself in a fantasy land and embark on adventures exclusive in Marazion. Give ear to the folklore of Jack the Giant Killer and the petrified heart of the Cormoran - who is praised for being the utmost fearsome Giant to have roamed Cornwall. Legend says that the heart can be seen today!

In the summer season from July 1st until August 31st there is a dog restriction from 10.00am to 7.00pm in place but dogs are very welcome during the other months of the year and located just by the beach is a park perfectly suited for your little ones with a beach shop nearby to end the perfect day.

LOCAL BEACHES...

MARAZION - There's plenty of activities available to keep the whole family entertained at Marazion beach. The sandy beach is very safe and there are rock pools to explore around Chapel Rock and Marazion Harbour as well as sailing, windsurfing and paddle boarding.

LONG ROCK - A safe family friendly beach with accessible parking between Marazion and Penzance. The water is shallow for quite a long way out making it particularly safe for swimming and a popular spot for windsurfing. Popular for dog walking although a seasonal dog ban is in place.

PENZANCE - We don't tend to think of Penzance as a beach, but under the promenade wall there's a beach during much of the day, and its darker sand means that the sea often feels a touch warmer. There's good swimming off Battery Rocks behind the lido, and people meet there early every morning to swim to decorated markers out in the bay.

PERRENUTHNOE - At low tide Perranuthnoe is a sandy beach with some shingle and at high tide the sea mostly claims the beach. It's a popular spot for surfing and there are numerous rockpools perfect for exploring at either end of the beach.

PRUSSIA COVE - Prussia Cove is secluded and a small, quiet and intimate place famous for being the home of the Carter family, 18th Century smugglers. It's dog friendly year-round and a great spot for swimming, snorkelling and exploring the rock pools.

PRAA SANDS - Praa Sands is one of our favourites and a wonderful destination if you have children to entertain. It’s still relatively unknown and although busy in the summer you can still walk a bit further and find a quiet spot. The unpretentious mile long sandy beach is backed with sheltering sand dunes and is easily accessible from the carpark. The beach is great for sand castles and the shoreline is great for a swim while further out surfers can take on some surprisingly big waves.

THINGS TO DO...

SWIMMING - The sea at Marazion beach is clean, shallow and safe and there aren't any strong currents to catch you out. In the summer when the tide comes back in the water can be quite warm.

THE HOXTON SPECIAL - A cafe and water sports centre where you can learn to kitesurf, hire a paddleboard or take out a kayak and explore. They have a beach side coffee shop with vintage china and amazing cake as well as sunset yoga classes on the beach.

WALKING - Take a stroll through the town and stop off for a relaxing drink or snack at one of the cafes or pubs. Visit the art galleries that are packed with local work or choose a gift to take home from one of the stunning gift shops.

Once you’ve had a stroll around the town you may want to explore a bit further. Marazion to Perranuthnoe takes in excellent views across Mounts Bay.

PLACES OF INTEREST - Visit St Michaels Mount and feel the magic of the iconic castle or walk along the lovely golden sand of the beach. You may even see horses enjoying a gallop across the sand or dolphins jumping in the bay (especially near the bow of a boat).

St Michael’s Mount is the Cornish equivalent to Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy. It is spectacular and accessed via a man-made granite causeway at low tide and by boat at high tide. It is home to 30 permanent inhabitants and looked after by the National Trust with a chapel and castle dating from the 1100s. The castle’s gardens have sub-tropical species that benefit from the salty sea air on the steep terraces and there’s live music on in the summer. You can also tour the castle and head to either the sail loft or beach box for a bite to eat and a coffee.
