How does an Australian referendum work?

Before a referendum can take place in Australia, the changes that are being proposed have to be approved by Parliament first. After that, the Australian public is asked to vote on the decision.

A referendum can only be approved in Australia if it is approved by a double majority, which means:

    * A majority of voters in a majority of states
    * A majority of voters across the nation
