Major General Michael C. Wehr became the Deputy Chief of Engineers/Deputy Commanding General on 25 September 2017. As such, he is second in command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has more than 33,500 civilian employees and 750 military personnel who provide project management and construction support to 250 Army and Air Force installations in more than 110 countries around the world.

As the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Deputy Commanding General, Wehr is responsible for policy and programming in support of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ project management, construction support and engineering missions executed around the world. He plays a critical role in contingency operations supporting national defense as well as civil works and emergency response programs in support of national security. Also, as the Deputy Chief of Engineers, Wehr advises the Chief of Engineers on real estate and engineering matters and programs related to the approximately 90,000 engineer soldiers within the Regular Army, Guard, and Reserve.

Prior to this assignment, Wehr served as Commanding General of the Mississippi Valley Division and president of the Mississippi River Commission. Wehr served in Afghanistan as Director of the Joint Engineering Directorate of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan, acting as the principal engineer advisor to the theater commander. He simultaneously served as the Commander of the Transatlantic Division (Forward-Afghanistan), responsible for all USACE activities in Afghanistan.

Wehr has previously served as Commanding General of the USACE South Pacific Division, San Francisco, California, and Commander of the USACE Vicksburg District, Vicksburg, Mississippi. He also served as Commander, 307th Engineer Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, Iraq; and Commander, Charlie Company, 307th Engineer Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Other positions include: Director, Combined Joint-Engineer, Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan; Chief, Transformation Division, G-7, 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and Engineer Plans Officer, U.S. Pacific Command, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii.

Wehr graduated from the University of Santa Clara in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He also holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, was a Senior Service College Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is a graduate of the United States Army Command and General Staff College. He is a registered professional engineer in Virginia.
