George Clooney Says His Stint on ER Prepared Him for Twins

Also, three names he and Amal won’t be using.

Since George and Amal Clooney confirmed in February that they’re having twins, the actor has remained firmly in the “all baby talk, all the time (thanks to interview questions)” stage of celebrity parenthood.

He and Julianne Moore were on hand at CinemaCon in Las Vegas to reveal the first trailer for Suburbicon, which Clooney directed, and the red-carpet conversation naturally turned to the father-to-be’s role preparation.

“Hang on for a minute,” Clooney deadpanned when E! asked him if he was ready for the twins. “I played a pediatrician on ER. So I know how to work on extra children. . . . If there’s any accidents, I’m there. I’m the guy.”

“Yeah, he played a doctor on TV. And that’s all you need,” Moore said, the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of parenthood practically flashing before her rolling eyes.

“I didn’t know that we’d have kids,” Clooney continued. “I was very happy that we were going to get married and then [a pregnancy] seemed like the next step.”

When E!’s Marc Malkin suggested he was “glowing,” Moore added, “He talks about her all the time. You do, you do. ‘Amal, Amal, Amal.’ It’s really nice.”

(One of the takeaways from this whole interaction is that Moore and Clooney appear to be great friends, and their riffing is making our “imaginary couples dinner at the Clooney’s Sonning estate” generator go absolutely haywire.)

Next, they performed a quick bit about baby names. In the following scene, Clooney plays the soon-to-be father just trying to give his two children a name just to help them move through the world, and Moore plays the ornery familial name judger:

Clooney: “I’ve had friends pick out names around their parents and then it becomes . . . “

Moore: “‘Ahh, I hate that name . . .’”

Clooney: “. . . whatever name you pick they’re like, ‘Oh, I don’t like that. That guy’s a prime minister . . .’”

Moore: “Susan?”

Clooney: “Can’t name her Susan. You remember your Aunt Susan?’ ”

Moore: “That’s right, she was awful!”

Meanwhile, all celebrity baby-name predictors disperse to their underground bunkers to cross “Susan” off the wall and remove the red thread connecting the name to “Clooney baby number one?” End scene.

While they’re down in the bunker, they can cross “Casa” and “Amigos” off the wall, too. Clooney told Entertainment Tonight that Amal wouldn’t let him turn their twins into sponsored content for his tequila brand, Casamigos. “That’s the one thing I’m not allowed to do,” he said. “It was just a thought. I mean, you know, it’s a family business.”
