More than 700 entries from 11 countries convened in Kreuth, Germany, to compete at the 2008 European Paint Horse 

Championships.

wo years ago, Per Erik 

Haugom was sitting at home in 

Norway, dreaming of going to the 

European Paint Horse Championships 

(EPHC). But his dream was 

nothing compared to the real deal— 

traveling with friends in a tour bus fit 

for a rock star, riding with some of 

Europe’s best horses and riders, hearing 

the Norwegian anthem and competing 

on his country’s first Nations 

Cup team. 

Luckily for Haugom, there were 

four other Norwegian riders willing to 

load up their horses and families and 

make their first trip to Kreuth, Germany, 

for the event, held September 

16–21. The entire group traveled in a 

passenger coach with a horse-trailer 

conversion in back. Their 24-hour 

journey crossed three countries, covered 

1,800 kilometers (1,118 miles) 

and included two ferry rides. And in 

case you’re wondering, the average 

cost of gas in Germany is $7.79 

(USD) per gallon. 

The Norwegians joined Paint 

enthusiasts from 10 other countries, 

including the first horses from the 

Czech Republic and Poland, to compete 

at the largest Paint event ever 

held in Europe. Both the number of 

horses and entries were up significantly. 

The event attracted 272 horses,

up 13 percent from the year before, 

and 708 entries, up 8.7 percent. 

“All of us, we can’t believe we’re 

here, riding in this big arena we’ve 

only seen on the Internet” said Haugom. 

“We came down here with no 

expectations at all.” 

And just because it’s your first time, 

doesn’t mean you aren’t ready for the 

big time. Riding Cortez The Killer, a 

2003 black tobiano gelding born and 

raised at a ski resort in the mountains 

in Norway, Haugom finished fourth 

in both the Novice Amateur and 

Amateur reining, and in the top 10 in 

Junior reining. In all, the Norwegians 

took home four medals, including 

two golds. 

The Norwegians may have surprised 

themselves, but they represent 

the new face in European competition. 

The Germans still have the 

home team advantage—with 60 percent 

of the horses entered, they definitely 

outnumber their neighbors— 

but they only won 41 percent of the 

medals. Not only have the numbers 

increased, but good horses are coming 

from every country, making the 

competition very exciting. 

“The quality was really good,” said 

Lori Gordon of Washington, Pennsylvania, 

one of the five judges. 

“There were horses here that could 

go and be competitive anywhere in 

the world.”

Kris Wilson of Lubbock, Texas. 

Carl Thurow, then-President of the 

American Paint Horse Association 

(APHA), also made his first trip to the 

European Championship. 

“I was very impressed,” he said. “I 

wish more Americans could see European 

horse shows. The European competitors 

are very skilled. The competition 

is very friendly, but the pride in 

their country shows through.” 

Some of the most memorable 

moments were during the medal 

ceremonies. Over the course of five 

days, 10 different national anthems 

were played. 

“I love the playing of the national 

anthem during each award ceremony,” 

said Thurow. “Their enthusiasm 

is infectious.” 

As horses and riders gathered in the 

arena after the Nations Cup, the 

event’s overall winners were honored. 

APHA again sponsored two awards in 

the Youth, Amateur and Open divi-

Heike Strambach and 

Shilosspottedstar, who won 

the Youth Gelding Plus 

award in 2007, returned to 

capture the European All- 

Around Youth title and 

APHA’s High-Point Performance 

award. The German 

rider from Baumenheim 

and her 12-year-old red 

roan overo gelding earned a 

gold medals in Youth 

horsemanship and huntseat 

equitation, and a 

bronze medal in Youth 

showmanship. 

Smart Bandit and Sophie 

Muhr rode away with the $1,000 

USD Gelding Plus check in the Youth 

division. The duo won gold 

in Youth trail, and silvers in 

Western pleasure and horsemanship. 

The 12-year-old 

sorrel overo gelding is owned 

by Josef Muhr of Arbesthal, 

Austria. 

Back to defend their Amateur 

title, Joys Skip N Bar 

and Nicole Beschorner captured 

both the European All- 

Around Amateur title and 

APHA’s High-Point Performance 

award. The equestrienne 

from Renningen, Germany, 

guided the 9-year-old 

bay tobiano gelding, owned 

by Manfred Beschorner, to 

silver medals in Amateur 

Senior Western pleasure and 

Whata Queen and Laura 

Schultz captured five medals 

in solid Paint-bred events, 

and an all-around title.

Before coming to Germany, Swiss 

rider Christine Höltschi decided to 

retire Majestic Red Shandy after this 

show. With 332 lifetime APHA 

points and three gold medals, she felt 

the 12-year-old sorrel tobiano gelding 

had done it all. Well, almost everything. 

In addition to a gold medal in 

Amateur trail, and bronze medals in 

hunt-seat equitation and horsemanship, 

to her complete surprise, he won 

the Gelding Plus award in the Amateur 

division and 

$1,000 USD. 

In the Open 

division, entries 

were up 18 percent.

Over the course of five days, 10 different national anthems were played. 

Junior Reining, with 23 entries and 

some of Europe’s top riders and talented 

horses, was one of the most anticipated 

classes of the week. Less than 

two weeks after finishing second in 

Americana’s Open Reining Derby in 

Augsburg, Germany, Nico Hörmann 

and Gunners Crome Son wowed the 

crowd with their run. The duo earned 

a score of 219 and the gold medal for 

owner Karolien Hendrikse of 

Kootwikerbroek, the Netherlands. 

“I was happy with [Gunners Crome 

Son],” said Hörmann. “The competition 

is getting tougher every year. It’s 

European Champion titles and 

medals were awarded to 10 Youth 

classes.

On her third, but certainly not her 

last, trip to the European Championships, 

Florence Perriaux of 

Francheville, France, finally achieved 

her dream and earned the European 

All-Around Open title with KF Royally 

Impressed. Florence and her 

5-year-old cremello overo stallion 

won gold in aged stallions and silver 

in hunter hack. 

The APHA’s High-Point 

Performance award in the 

Open division went to 

Cashin The Assets, owned 

by Eleonora Bordelin of 

Vicenza, Italy. Shown by 

Karin Prevedel, the 7-yearold 

bay overo mare won a 

medal in every Open Senior 

class she entered—gold in 

Western pleasure, silver in 

hunter under saddle and 

bronze in trail. 

The Open Gelding Plus 

title and $1,000 USD went 

to Wrap And Roll, owned 


by C. J. van Bekkum, of Hall, the 

Netherlands. Karin van Bekkum 

showed the 5-year-old red roan overo 

gelding, earning a bronze in Junior 

trail and a fourth place finish in 

Junior Western pleasure. 

Novice Amateur classes were added 

last year, but this was the first time exhibitors 

could earn European Champion 

titles and medals in that division. 

The response was enthusiastic and 

entries more than doubled. 

Miss Sophia Kid earned three medals—one silver 

and two bronze—in Youth, Amateur and Open 

halter classes.

Taking the top award as the European 

All-Around Novice Amateur 

was the Swedish duo of Cecilia 

Anderson and Meant To Be Lucky. 

The pair won gold in Novice Amateur 

horsemanship and trail, as well 

as silver in hunter under saddle. 

Anderson and her 8-year-old bay 

tobiano gelding hail from Bäckaryd, 

in southern Sweden. 

Solid Paint-bred classes, always 

popular in Europe, also experienced 

tremendous growth, with entries 

nearly four times higher than the 

previous year. 

Laura Schultz of Ulfborg, 

Denmark, made the trip for the first 

time with her father Jorn and Whata 

Queen, a 4-year-old solid sorrel mare 

they bred. Laura, who is only 21 

years old, has done most of the 

mare’s training. 

“In the beginning of the year, when 

I started to ride her, I didn’t plan to 

come here,” said Laura. “But she 

made a lot of progress.” 

Indeed. The duo won two golds in 

solid Paint-bred Amateur showmanship 

and Western pleasure, silvers in 

horsemanship and hunter under 

saddle, earning them the European 

All-Around Amateur Solid Paint- 

Bred title. 

KF Royally Impressed won gold in 

Aged Stallions and captured silver 

in Hunter Hack with owner Florence 

Perriaux. 

Two Germans also earned European 

All-Around Solid Paint-Bred 

titles. Laura Pfeiffer of Weitnau, 

Germany, rode Hesa Nigel Paycheck 

to win the Youth division, with a gold 

medal in hunter under saddle and 

silver medals in showmanship and 

Western pleasure. In the Open division, 

the title went to Astrid Schon of 

Neuss, Germany, and Miss Impass J 

Bar with points in halter, reining and 

hunter hack. 

At the end of the week, the focus 

shifted from individual accomplishments 

to teamwork as seven countries 

went head to head in the Nations 

Cup. Teams from Austria, Denmark, 

Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden and 

Switzerland competed in five events: 

trail, Western pleasure, horsemanship, 

showmanship and reining. 

From the parade of teams to the 

presentation of awards, spectators, 

dressed in their country’s colors and 

waving flags, enthusiastically cheered 

on the riders. 

Italy set a festive, yet competitive, 

tone in the first class when rider Matteo 

Sala tucked a flowing tail extension 

under his hat to match his 

mount, Stylish Sensation. After the 

first class, Germany—who won the 

Cup in 2006 and 2007—was in the 

lead with 20 points, with Italy one 

point behind. Going into the last 

event, reining, Italy was in the lead, 

with Germany one point behind. 

After each team’s lowest event score 

was dropped, in a surprise upset, Austria 

came out on top with 72 points, 

earning gold medals, Gist Silversmiths 

belt buckles donated by APHA and 

600 euros donated by Longhorn 

Western pleasure classes were among the most popular events, netting up to 22 class entries throughout the show.

The awards ceremony was 

particularly touching, as this 

was Austria’s first Nations 

Cup win. Holding their flag, 

emotional Austrians stood

The celebration of Paint 

Horse Club Germany’s 25 th 

anniversary was the European 

Championship’s grand 

finale. Exhibitors and guests 

from every nation came 

together the last evening to 

mark the end of a successful 

show and honor the APHA’s 

oldest international club during 

a barbecue dinner and 

country Western concert. 

For the Norwegians, this first trip 

to the European Championship was 

unforgettable.

on our farm,” said competitor 

Bergslid Valborg. “I never thought 

when we came here he 

would win a gold medal. I 

was crying the whole time 

during our national anthem. 

It was a big moment.” 

Teammate Hanne Christine 

Oeverli shared that 

same feeling. 

“This was a huge experience,” 

she said, “something 

I dreamt about a long 

time. Coming to the European 

Championship, I 

think it’s great.” 

And it’s never too early to 

start dreaming about next 

year. 

The European Paint 

Horse Championship will 

return to Kreuth, Germany, 

September 7–11, 2009. To
