LEDWARD BARRACKS

SCHWEINFURT, GERMANY

Construction of the Panzer Kaserne was completed in 1936. The Panzer Kaserne was renamed Ledward Barracks in honor of LTC William J. Ledward. Colonel Ledward was killed in action in Italy, June 1944. He was the Commanding Officer of the 27th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. The US Army took control of Ledward Barracks in 1948.

  1. Hi Randy
Charley 2nd 39th, Ledward March 73 / Nov 74, amo section because I passed a German driving test and could drive off base in mainly a 5 to ton.

    1. Hi Craig, I was also C 2/39 November 1972-May 1975. I was a driver/ RTO/ Recon Sgt in the Forward Observer section. I’m guessing your last name is Tshantz. I remember Underwood and Latimer as 5 ton drivers.

  2. Randy Hunt here,
2nd Battalion 39th Artillery HQ Battery at Ledward. Spent 27 months in the barracks next to the bombed out one, 70-73. Lost track of the guys many long years ago (mostly my fault). Have to admit there was quite a bit I was trying to forget. The CO said we all were cowards because we weren’t in Nam. He did his best to make our lives miserable. Funny thing is Captain Shake and Bake, pretty sure he never saw combat either.
Now that I’m done ranting, would be nice to hear from anyone from that era.

    1. Hi Randy, John here
1st battalion B company Headquarters platoon. Second barracks from the side fence. Worked in the motor pool. Fort Polk undergrad degree. Which explains why we would, on occasion, tape Dr Pepper cans together, add lighter fluid and a tennis ball and shoot them at your barracks open windows and your barracks would return fire 75, 76. Mortar crew was the best at it.
I understand the blocking out some of the bizarre rantings of paper shufflers and the damage they inflict all in the name of their professional reputation. Solid. Like cheese Wizz.
I was lucky enough to have landed in an outfit with a great CO, XO and one of the twin Sargents. Nice to hear from you my friend

    2. Brian Adams here,

I was with B Btry, 1/10th FA 71-75, my barracks was next to yours.

    1. Good morning.
      Spring 75 to fall 76
Does anyone remember Dykes operation haircut the summer of 76 and what caused it?

      1. Hey John… just thought I’d say hi… I can’t even remember how I got my hair cut while at Ledward…

        1. Well in July I had to eat up some leave before I DDed in Sept. Partied hardy for 2 weeks and arrives back in rough shape. General Dyke replaced General Crysler in between. I fell out for PT Monday am and there was a officer I didn’t recognize in his t shirt running alongside. I’ve never fell out during a run before but I wanted to that morning. The unknown officer decided to run alongside of me and kept glaring at me with the look that if I did fall out that it would be last thing I would do in this life. That look. It turned out that it was Dyke and he was looking for an example and I was it. I had to show up in headquarters with everyone who was in charge of me from the guy in charge of the room, motor pool Sargent, butter bar, xo, Co, a major. All of them. He tossed me out of the room and yelled at the rest. Just about everyone on the post had to get a haircut that day.
There’s alot of stuff that happened in between. What fun.

          1. Hey… Thanks for the reply… I remember those running days… got in trouble for turning the bill of my cap up on a hot day while on KP… had to wear my hard hat for three weeks… no fun doing jumping jacks with a hard hat on… I mean everywhere I went I had to have it on…
Here in Oklahoma we are supposed to receive 6” of rain from this evening through Thursday…
            Have a good day…
