Everything that sucks! And some things that don't.

"A different style of reviews, a bit crass and kind of raw, still enjoyable (currently with creepy teddy bears)." (Ray/Andy) / "You're pretty funny sometimes" (Gary) / "Pretty good blurb, but better stick 'rage bait' in there somewhere." (Greg)

"Schwetzingen"? "Speyer"? "Heidelberg"? What gibberish is this?

Aaaaaaand I'm back. E. and me decided to go on a short vacation before the Christmas-festivities reached their peak. We spent a total of three nights (and therefore sort of two full and two half days) in picturesque "Schwetzingen" near Mannheim and Heidelberg, if that's something that you're more familiar with? No? Doesn't matter. Mannheim is fucking ugly. Heidelberg is nice, though. We were there one of the days, I might have taken some pictures.

Speaking of which... we just returned today and I need some time to acclimate myself to home, so today's post isn't gonna be super-text-heavy, but... here's a bunch of pictures. Let's find out whether I managed to break BoardGameGeek, shall we?

Okay, the first batch is from the first day when we checked out the castle garden belonging to Schwetzingen Palace. They included a quite helpful danger sign right at the entrance...

The next ones I took the next day when we decided to visit Speyer, another city that isn't all that far from Schwetzingen (and which was easily reachable via bus, which was helpful, because we had decided to leave our cars at home and go to Schwetzingen and travel around the area with public transportation only). Here's some impressions from around the city's cathedral:

The next one isn't showing the cathedral, but it was nevertheless taken in Speyer. And it doesn't look like much from the outside...

Yup, this relatively nondescript warehouse-ish building housed the local branch of Sea Life, a not entirely uncontroversial chain of aquariums. As with other attractions featuring life animals, I was once more a bit torn, because even if the people responsible for this were doing a fantastic job, I don't know if this is a good thing, generally speaking. On the other hand, the fish are already there, so not giving them any money to care for them isn't helping much either, right? Ah well, here's some impressions from the inside.

Onward to something less controversial: the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer was hosting a special exhibit in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the creation of PLAYMOBIL. You know, these weird modular figures that are a bit like LEGO but not exactly? Turns out, these things weren't invented in Speyer, but very close by. And also turns out that the father of PLAYMOBIL, one Hans Beck, called these figures "Klickys". The more you know. Here's a couple of pictures:

And here's two more of Speyer, the first one taken from the upper level of the museum hosting that PLAYMOBIL-exhibit, which had an exhibit about some king Ludwig of Bavaria. Not the fun one. His grandfather.

And finally, here's some photographs from yesterday, when we visited Heidelberg. Not the castle, but other parts, like the "Alte Brücke" and the "Philosophenweg". Which was quite picturesque, but I think it will probably be prettier during the summer months...

And yeah, that's it, that's what we've been up to over the course of the last days, aside from eating too much (Japanese, Persian, Hungarian and German, if you can believe that) and also playing some games. Speaking of which, like the Teddy Bear below, I'll return to the gaming table very soon to deliver quality content to you. Probably. I don't know yet, tomorrow is time for another "Multiplayer Solitaire"-post and then the holidays are upon us. So... we'll have to wait and see. Anyway, here's the bear:

So yeah, see you tomorrow, I guess.
