CMC gum measured in mL. For a 5 kg batch, add 500 mL CMC Gum.

I rarely add colorants directly to my engobe because they are required in quite large percentages to really have good effect. Instead, I build up a surface that is white and then add a final layer or two of a color by applying underglazes (homemade, Amaco Velvet series, and Laguna underglazes). At times, mixing underglaze and the engobe before application has worked quite nicely.

I typically apply this engobe by spraying, though it can be brushed on as well. I tend to mix to a consistency of thick cream, or even a bit thicker. I find it can be applied at all stages, from leather hard to bisqueware, which is one of the things I like most about it.
