Summary[edit]

Description

The Residenz was the official residence of Bavaria's ruling Wittelsbach Family.

Like many other royal palaces in Europe, the Residenz is built with propaganda in mind, by highlighting the legitimacy and the power of the occupant. Claiming to be descendants of Roman caesars, or of Charlemagne, was one way for the Wittelsbachs to claim legitimacy; some Charlemagne images are seen here.

The Residenz was built and expanded over a few centuries, though what exists today is a post-World War II reconstruction (Munich was thoroughly destroyed by Allied bombing, and the Residenz was no exception), and lacks the "lived-in" feel that a real palace should have.
