About This Campaign

MIT Motorsports

We are MIT Motorsports, a team of 50 engineers at MIT who design, fabricate, and race an all-electric Formula One–style car at the Formula SAE competition in Brooklyn, Michigan.

On our team you’ll find mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, computer scientists, aerodynamics engineers―you name it! Our members range from first-year MIT students all the way to master’s and  graduate students, with each teammate owning a system on the car. We believe that our team’s diversity, passion for engineering, and specialized skills are what enable us to be one of the top-ranked  Formula SAE teams―not in the US but in the world.

We do almost everything from scratch, from welding our car’s frame and machining wheel packages to designing a custom electrical system and writing software to run the car―even fabricating our own battery pack! Watching the car go from a sketch in a notebook to speeding down the track at 90 miles per hour makes it all worth it.

Project Overview

Like most things, Covid-19 continues to affect the Formula Student community at large, with supply chain disruptions and ineffective knowledge transfer being our main pain points. Due to the related delays and challenges, it has taken all of 2022 to build our most ambitious car yet for the June 2023 competition.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve worked to design and manufacture a first-of-its-kind 4-wheel drive car with a convertible tripod architecture―something no Formula Student electric team in the US has been able to do. This involves everything from machining insanely-tight-tolerance planetary gearboxes in house to designing and testing a custom inverter/motor controller. We even made its wheel centers from scratch!

Recently, our car moved under its own power for the first time, but it’s still missing some vital parts for the 4-wheel-drive system. To finish manufacturing our most ambitious car yet, we need the help of our MIT community―aka alumni, family, students, and friends, like you!

How to Help

To support our team, please donate to our crowdfunding page today. We will need to be fully funded before the end of 2022, and you can track what you’re helping to make possible by following the Updates tab with progress pics of the car.

We’re also active on social media! Feel free to follow us on Facebook (@mitfsae) and Instagram (@mitmotorsports) to see what our team is up to!

Thank you so much for your support! It’s been a long, but fun, two years, and we are excited to finally get back on that racetrack!
